About the Role The Director of School Finance at Vertex plays a critical leadership role in supporting K–12 schools with the financial strategy, guidance, and infrastructure they need to thrive. As the senior leader of a regional portfolio, the Director is accountable for service quality and strategic growth, ensuring partner schools receive exceptional support while expanding the capacity to serve new schools. Key Responsibilities Lead the School Finance team by hiring, developing, and retaining senior managers and managers; coach them to act as fractional CFOs, providing budgeting, forecasting, board reporting, audit preparation, and financial analysis. Serve as the senior finance services lead for a defined geographic region, maintaining long‑term relationships, renewing contracts, and expanding the service line by identifying new school partnerships. Co‑design and improve the school finance service model, collaborating with other service lines (HR, Enrollment & Marketing, etc.) and supporting internal initiatives that increase efficiency and clarity. Develop and implement templates, tools, and documentation practices that enable scale, uphold quality standards, and support system teams in enhancing platform usage. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Data Analytics, or a related quantitative field. 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, including budgeting, audits, and financial planning for K–12 or mission‑driven organizations. 5+ years of managing and coaching professionals, with responsibility for hiring, development, and performance management. Direct experience supporting school leaders and boards, including ownership of board‑ready materials and participation in annual audits. Deep knowledge of public funding models, compliance requirements, and financial operations in the K–12 or charter school space in California. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field. Experience overseeing a regional or multi‑client finance service portfolio within an education or charter school support organization. Familiarity with enterprise financial systems such as NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Workday, or Vena. Experience designing and implementing service models, internal infrastructure, or standard team‑wide practices. Location Candidates must reside in California or the Phoenix, AZ area.
