City Overview Deltona is located along the I-4 corridor between Daytona Beach and Orlando, covering approximately 47 square miles and home to about 98,500 residents. It is primarily residential but experiencing commercial growth. Department Overview Deltona Fire Rescue operates 5 stations, a logistics station, 84 operations personnel, 16 administrative personnel, 4 ALS engines, 1 ALS quint, 3 ALS transport units, 1 Division Chief vehicle, 1 heavy rescue and several specialty vehicles, plus an ALS bike team, honor guard, and special operations team. Position Definition This role works under general supervision of a lieutenant. Responsibilities include protecting life and property from hazards, performing fire, rescue, and EMS duties, and following department policies. Essential Functions If hired as an EMT: must be a certified Volusia County Lead Paramedic within four years from hire date. If hired as an EMT‑Paramedic: must be a certified Volusia County Lead Paramedic within twelve months of hire date. Must achieve Working Out of Rank Engineer status within two years of hire (or from Firefighter Competency Certification if hired as trainee). Maintain knowledge of laws, policies, codes, and department specific plans. Follow chain of command and written policies during operations and in disasters. Respond to emergencies with fire company or rescue unit and provide Basic or Advanced Life Support as part of a fire or rescue company. Aid in mitigation of emergency and non-emergency incidents as directed. Serve overtime as needed during vacancies or out‑of‑ordinary events. Update knowledge and skills in EMS and fire tasks through professional training and may require off‑shift commitment. Firefighter Specific Duties and Responsibilities Conduct station tours, provide public information, and set a professional standard within the community. Manage and reduce workplace rumors and negativity, fostering a positive environment. Remove, extract, and rescue persons from danger, recognize acute symptoms requiring immediate care, and administer life‑saving medical and rescue procedures. Connect hose to hydrants, pumps, standpipes, and sprinkler systems; enter burning buildings, operate nozzles, and spray water or foam. Operate hand fire extinguishers; raise and climb ladders; work from aerial apparatus; ventilate buildings. Perform salvage operations, sweep water, remove debris, and place smoke ejectors. Conduct daily inspections of apparatus and equipment, notify supervisor of defects, and maintain cleaning and maintenance tasks at the station. Recognize hazardous material situations, identify unknown substances, set up decontamination, and assist in removal/disposal of hazardous material within qualifications. Perform work-area, station cleaning, and grounds maintenance; clean vehicles and equipment. Perform other duties as required. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED. Working out of classification (rank) within 24 months from hire date (or from compliance date if trainee). Special Certifications and Licenses (meet CBA) Current Florida State Firefighters Certificate of Compliance. Current Florida State EMT Certification (must be Lead Paramedic within 4 years of hire). Current Florida State Driver’s License. Current Basic Life Support CPR Certification (AHA preferred). EVOC or CEVO 16‑hour Emergency Driving Certification. Preferred: Current Florida State Paramedic or enrollment in a local school to become one.
