Position Summary
The Substance Abuse Counselor is responsible for facilitating group counseling sessions, conducting substance use and behavioral health assessments, maintaining clinical documentation, coordinating client care, and participating as an active member of the interdisciplinary treatment team. This position plays a vital role in supporting clients throughout their recovery journey within our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Facilitate psychoeducational and process groups for clients in the IOP/PHP program
• Provide individual counseling sessions as assigned
• Complete clinical documentation, progress notes, treatment plans, and discharge summaries within agency timelines
• Conduct behavioral health and substance use assessments
• Prepare monthly reports and documentation for DFCS, probation officers, courts, and referral sources as required
• Participate in weekly clinical staffing meetings and interdisciplinary treatment team meetings
• Attend daily shift meetings and community meetings
• Coordinate care with psychiatric providers, nurses, therapists, case managers, outreach staff, and leadership team
• Monitor client progress and assist with treatment planning and goal development
• Approve visitation, phone privileges, and off-site passes when applicable
• Maintain compliance with state, federal, and accreditation standards
• Support a safe, therapeutic, and recovery-focused environment
Required Qualifications
• Must possess a current Certified Addiction Counselor credential, including one of the following: CADC I, CADC II, CAC I, CAC II, or equivalent addiction counseling certification approved by ADACBGA or GACA. Candidates who are not currently licensed/certified must have prior substance abuse counseling experience and must be actively working toward and eligible for certification/licensure.
• Strong knowledge of substance use disorders, recovery principles, relapse prevention, and co-occurring mental health disorders
• Excellent communication, documentation, and organizational skills
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Human Services, or a related field from an accredited college or university
• Additional certifications such as MAC preferred
• Previous experience in IOP, PHP, MAT, residential treatment, or behavioral health settings preferred
