Job Title: Registered Nurse - Emergency Room Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Emergency Room Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience in emergency department required; First-time travelers must have 2 years of permanent staff RN experience in acute care; Travelers must be separated for 1 year if previously a permanent staff. License: Required state license Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS, CPI or MOAB Must-Have: General nursing knowledge, emergency department experience, ventilator management, critical care drips/titration, cardiac rhythm interpretation, measuring cardiac strips, drains, chest tubes, hemodynamic lines (e.g., arterial lines, central venous pressure), stroke experience (TPA administration), conscious sedation, assisting with splinting, and knowledge of suicide risk assessments. Description: This role requires caring for a diverse patient population. Patient types include infants and end-of-life care. Patient acuity levels range from Med-Surg to ICU. Traumas are stabilized and transferred as necessary. Common conditions include STEMI, NSTEMI, heart failure, stroke requiring interventions, spinal precautions, seizures, DKA, sepsis, respiratory failure, renal failure, and COVID-19. The patient-to-nurse ratio is typically 1:3-4 or 1:5 in fast-track areas. A competency exam on EKG interpretation is required prior to arrival. Support on the unit includes charge nurses who may take patient assignments, in-house phlebotomy, and hospitalists available 24/7. The charting system used is EMR: Meditech Expanse, and IV pumps are Alaris with medication dispensing through Pyxis. Scheduling involves a weekend rotation every other week. Mandatory work schedules may include 4 days one week followed by 3 days the next, or 5 days one week followed by 2 days the next. Requests for time off are limited to up to 7 days and must be scheduled carefully. Travelers are expected to be professional, with specific dress code requirements and adherence to unit culture, which is traveler-friendly.
