Position Characteristics

The credentialed School District Nurse is responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating and evaluating school health services that:

• Facilitate the alignment of SFSD programs priorities and objectives with school site plans
• Assist school sites with the implementation of comprehensive/coordinated SFSD programs guided by the tenets of youth development in an asset building model
• Assist with the development and coordination of student support services through Student Success Teams and Student Assistance Programs at school sites to address the academic, behavioral, attendance and health related needs of students
• Support schools in meeting their school site goals as they create and maintain school environments that are healthy, safe, secure and supportive in order to enhance learning for the entire school community
• Promote the implementation of student, family, or staff needs assessment(s) as requested by school sites and/ or the District
• Support revenue collection and program evaluation. The school nurse functions independently under state and agency guidelines and policies.

Duties and Responsibilities

• prior experience as a Registered Nurse through which a general knowledge and understanding of health and human relationships has been developed
• knowledge of San Francisco’s public schools and a passionate belief in SFUSD’s commitment to health and wellness
• strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships within Student and Family Services Division and across SFUSD
• experience planning and facilitating professional development and knowledge of adult learning principles
• success leading effective teams and individuals
• ability to work effectively and respond quickly to difficult situations that involve confidential and sensitive matters
• experience providing guidance and oversight of programs and services in accordance with approved standards and practices as specified by School District Policies, California State Health and Safety Codes, and Education Codes
• experience and success with effective written and verbal communication, facilitation and presentation to large groups and a variety of audiences (e.g. groups of students, staff meetings, parent and/or community groups)
• strong computer skills including Google applications

Minimum Qualifications:

Requirements for the Preliminary Credential

Individuals must satisfy all of the following:

1. Official transcripts showing a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally-accredited college or university.

3. Submit an application through CTC Online, and if not previously submitted to the Commission, complete the fingerprinting process.
4. Application processing fee.

Requirements for the Clear Credential

Individuals must receive the formal recommendation of a Commission-approved school nurse program and must satisfy all of the following requirements:

1. Verify possession of a Preliminary School Nurse Services Credential.
2. Verify possession of a valid Registered Nurse License issued by the State of California.
3. Complete two years of successful experience as a school nurse (If the Preliminary School Nurse Credential was issued on or before July 1, 1981, this experience is not required).
4. Complete a Commission-approved school nurse program and obtain the formal recommendation of the program sponsor.

Requirements for Renewing the Clear Credential

Individuals must satisfy all of the following:

1. Verify possession of a valid Registered Nurse License issued by the State of California.
2. Submit an application through CTC Online.
3. Application processing fee.

SFUSD requires all teachers to hold or be pursuing a valid California credential and an English Learner or Bilingual Authorization before their start date
