Lead One of the Most Historic Youth Camps in America Founded in 1921, Camp Atwater is the oldest Black‑owned and operated residential summer camp in the United States. For more than a century, Camp Atwater has empowered young people through leadership development, cultural affirmation, outdoor recreation, and lifelong community. Operated by the Urban League of Springfield, Camp Atwater is more than a summer camp — it is a living legacy that has shaped generations of young leaders. We are seeking a dynamic, experienced Camp Director who is passionate about youth development, culturally affirming spaces, and building meaningful experiences for young people. This is a rare opportunity to help guide the future of one of the most historic youth institutions in the country. What You’ll Do The Camp Director leads the planning and operation of Camp Atwater’s residential summer program while helping expand youth development initiatives connected to the Urban League of Springfield. Leading daily operations of the residential summer camp program Recruiting, training, and supervising seasonal staff Creating engaging programs that build leadership, confidence, and community Ensuring camper safety and compliance with Massachusetts health and camp regulations Building strong relationships with families, alumni, and community partners Supporting year‑round youth development initiatives connected to Camp Atwater Who We’re Looking For We’re seeking a leader who believes in the power of youth programs to change lives. 5+ years of experience in residential camps, youth development, education, or community programs Experience supervising staff and managing program operations Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills A commitment to culturally responsive and inclusive youth programming Ability to live on‑site during the summer camp season Demonstrated experience with risk management and camp accreditation Massachusetts camp director requirements apply, including minimum age 25, CPR/First Aid certification, and CORI/SORI background checks. Schedule Pre‑season planning: April – June (part‑time) Camp season: July – August (full‑time residential) Post‑season: August – October (part‑time) Compensation Summer season stipend: $7,200 – $9,000 Additional hourly compensation for pre‑ and post‑season work Based on experience This position may evolve into a year‑round leadership role as Camp Atwater expands its programs and impact.
