Position Summary The Assistant Store Manager supports the Store Manager in overseeing daily retail operations to ensure an efficient, safe, and customer-focused store environment. This role is responsible for staff supervision, operational excellence, merchandise flow, and maintaining high standards that drive sales and support Goodwill’s mission. Key Responsibilities Store Operations & Performance Ensure store operates within established hours and is adequately staffed Maintain high standards of store appearance, cleanliness, and organization Monitor and ensure achievement of sales goals and performance standards Control and minimize store expenses while maximizing efficiency Ensure appropriate inventory levels and merchandise flow to maximize sales Organize backroom production areas to optimize output Customer Service & Donor Relations Promote excellent customer and donor service at all times Train and coach staff to greet, assist, and thank customers and donors Develop and expand the local donor base Staff Supervision & Development Support recruitment efforts, including scheduling interviews and recommending hires Conduct onboarding, ongoing training, and skills development for employees Assist the Store Manager with performance evaluations and employee development Address employee concerns, complaints, or conflicts professionally Schedule and lead team meetings to communicate updates and address issues Ensure accurate timekeeping and compliance with payroll procedures Compliance, Safety & Loss Prevention Enforce corporate policies related to personnel, operations, and loss prevention Train staff on safety, security, and loss prevention procedures Conduct regular bag and locker checks in compliance with policy Ensure the safety and security of store premises, employees, and assets Maintain proper cash-handling procedures and internal controls Ensure timely and accurate bank deposits Financial & Administrative Duties Prepare, review, and submit required reports including sales, cash, donor logs, and invoices Reconcile cash, deposits, and banking documentation Maintain adequate cash levels for daily operations Assist with payroll reconciliation in the absence of the Store Manager Additional Duties Provide guidance to staff regarding policies and procedures Recommend improvements to increase sales and operational efficiency Perform other duties as assigned to support business needs Qualifications Education & Experience High School Diploma or GED required; some college preferred Minimum of two (2) years of retail experience Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience Experience training and supervising employees in a retail environment preferred Skills & Competencies Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills Excellent organizational and time management abilities Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment Basic math and cash-handling proficiency Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and retail systems Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays Working Conditions Primarily indoor retail environment Exposure to donated goods which may be dusty or soiled May be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) What We Offer Generous paid time off Comprehensive health benefits (medical, dental, vision) Employer-sponsored life insurance Parental leave benefits Retirement savings plan with employer contributions Transit and commuter benefits Access to wellness and financial resources Equal Opportunity Statement Goodwill NYNJ is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace.
