Job Description City College of San Francisco is looking to recruit full time, 40 hours per week, full year (260 days/fiscal year) Institutional Police Officers. Under the direction of the Chief of Police or his/her designee, the Institutional Police Officer works in the San Francisco Community College District Police Department and acts as a peace officer pursuant to Section 830.32(a) of the California Penal Code and Section 72330 of the California Education Code. The San Francisco Community College District Police Department is a Peace Officers' Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) participant. The officer’s primary functions are to provide protection of life and property and to enforce state and local laws and college policies within the jurisdiction of the San Francisco Community College District campuses. In accordance with District policy, the San Francisco Community College District Police Department is a sworn unarmed department. Employees are required to sign a memorandum acknowledging their understanding of the district’s policy in this regard. Essential Functions Administers first aid to students, staff and/or visitors for the purpose of providing immediate emergency medical care. Arrests individuals engaging in illegal activities for the purpose of apprehending suspects to prevent further illegal activities. Collaborates with community agencies for the purpose of addressing individual cases and/or taking action regarding investigations, criminal activities, gang activities, vandalism, etc. Communicates safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of such information, the potential consequences of violation, and building a community relationship. Enforces applicable laws for the purpose of responding appropriately in accordance to federal, state, District, and municipal laws, rules, and policies. Enforces college policies as necessary for the purpose of implementing campus Police Department processes and student code of conduct. Escorts students, assigned personnel and/or visitors for the purpose of providing safety and site security. Implements safety escorts for the purpose of ensuring safe movement on campus. Investigates potential campus crimes and/or student related community incidents for the purpose of resolving conflicts, taking appropriate action, and/or referring to outside agency for resolution. Participates in unit meetings, in‑service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions. Patrols college facilities for the purpose of providing visibility, maintaining security, and deterring criminal activities. Prepares a variety of documents for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information. Presents information in a variety of settings for the purpose of informing individuals of public safety, law enforcement procedures and individual rights. Provides traffic and parking control for the purpose of maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of parking lots. Reports safety issues or concerns for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment, free of hazards. Responds to a variety of situations for the purpose of making appropriate response and taking the appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns. Responds calls for services from a variety of sources regarding campus security issues for the purpose of providing information, direction and/or referral for addressing inquiry. Testifies in court proceedings for the purpose of providing information regarding alleged illegal activity. Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. Qualifications Education: High School diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination). Experience: One (1) year of experience as a police officer, member of a military police unit or other work involving the safeguarding of life and property. License and Certification: Possession of a valid California Driver License and Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate (issued by California Department of Justice, Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training) prior to field work assignment and within twelve (12) months of hire date. Desirable Qualifications Certificate of completion from a P.O.S.T. academy. Completion of 60 units of college credits preferably in the Administration of Justice field. Two years of verifiable work experience. One year of law enforcement experience. Specialized training in law enforcement, security or related field. Experience in working within an educational setting preferably in community colleges. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students, faculty, and staff. Effective interpersonal skills enabling the officer to effectively deal with a diverse population of students, staff and the general public. Good organizational skills. Willingness to work extended hours or start early when required. Ability to work and perform job duties effectively under pressure. Ability to pay close attention to detail to ensure consistent accuracy and prioritize workload with frequent interruptions. Effective experience in conflict resolution in person, virtually, email and/or by phone. Ability to take initiative, problem solve and work independently with good judgment about when to seek direction. Understanding of regulations related to handling of confidential student information. Department Public Safety Department. Location City College of San Francisco, Ocean Campus and other campuses. Salary Range Hourly: $49.40 – $59.80. Annual: $102,765 – $124,387. Appointment Type Classified – Provisional. This is a Temporary Provisional (TPV) position excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process. It is considered “at will” and shall serve at the discretion of the Department Head. The position will be subject to the Permanent Civil Service Examination process at a later date. Successful participation in the Permanent Civil Service Examination and selection through an open competitive process is needed in order to be considered for the permanent appointment. Benefits New employees hired on or after October 1, 2013 will contribute 2% of salary to the San Francisco Retiree Health Care Trust Fund (RHCTF). Institutional Police positions are eligible for membership in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).
