Description: The Emergency Room has a fast track with 5 beds. There are a total of 26 beds and trauma bays. No separate psych/seclusion rooms are available. The unit typically sees 40 to 160 patients per day. The nurse-patient ratio is 3:1 or 4:1. The electronic medical record system is Cerner - FirstNet. Charge nurses do not have a patient assignment. Nurse aides and paramedics assist with patient care and can perform tasks like EKGs and splints. Security and patient sitters are always present in the waiting area. Weekend requirements include working every other weekend. Holidays will rotate with core staff. Scrub colors are navy blue for RNs and hunter green for aides. Tele/monitor techs are not present; RNs must read and interpret their own strips. Ventilators are available in the unit. 2 to 3 physicians and mid-level providers are present. Registered nurses are responsible for lab draws. There is no IV team available. Respiratory therapy is available 24/7. Pharmacy services are available 24/7. Shifts consist of 12-hour periods. Common diagnoses include STEMI and CVA cases. The Emergency Room serves both adults and pediatrics, with a nearby children's hospital for critical pediatric cases. The patient population mainly includes individuals from low socioeconomic backgrounds and those experiencing homelessness, with a significant incidence of drug abuse. The unit experiences 55,000 visits per year. A minimum of 3 to 5 years of previous emergency department experience is required. The hospital can cancel up to 4 shifts during a 13-week assignment. Charting is performed using Cerner.
