Data Architect II, III, IV Job Summary Working in the Health System Insight Center, the Data Architecthelps build and maintain the Health System InsightPlatform—University of Utah Health's enterprise environment forcurated datasets to inform system decision-making and action. As amember of the Insight Center, you will partner with clinicalanalysts to translate ambiguous questions into durable,domain-focused data assets (e.g., care lines, market intelligence,economic models, and system performance). This role is distinctfrom “one-off” report writing; success is measured by buildingstable foundations that eventually graduate into standardizedproduction. Day-to-day activities include: Client-facing discovery: Partnering with frontline stakeholdersto understand the “why” before building the “what.” Analytical diagnosis: Using structured methods to trace dataissues to their source. Durable iteration: Designing first-iteration assets that arebuilt to outlive their initial request. Standardized stewardship: Applying institutional naming anddocumentation standards from day one. Production graduation: Orchestrating the handoff of stableassets to EDW and platform engineers. This position does not offer visa sponsorship now or in the future. Responsibilities Successful performance is demonstrated through the timely,accurate, and professional execution of the responsibilities below: Design and build new, domain-focused data assets in directpartnership with clinical analysts and care line teams to answerstrategic, clinical, or operational questions. Iterate on data structures and definitions as the understandingof a question develops, ensuring assets are built for long-termdurability rather than one-off use. Standardize naming conventions, business definitions, andderivations from the initial build to ensure data integrity andease of use for downstream partners. Collaborate with Enterprise Data Warehouse architects toleverage existing institutional assets and ensure new workcomplements the broader data infrastructure. Orchestrate the handoff of stable, mature assets to theplatform's internally-focused architects and engineers forgraduation into the gold-standard production layer. Work with Solution Analysts to migrate analyst inquiries towardshared, durable assets, reducing the reliance on custom,non-standardized datasets. Integrate data privacy and protection standards into the designof all new datasets, ensuring the secure handling of PHI andadherence to IRB-governed protocols. Pursue continuous professional development and keep pace withemerging technologies to support the ongoing growth of the HealthSystem Insight Platform. Undertake additional architectural duties as needed to supportthe Insight Center and the organization's evolving data needs. Minimum Qualifications EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher educationcan be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience(Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related workexperience). Department may hire employee at one of the followingjob levels: Data Architect, II: Requires a bachelor's (orequivalency) + 4 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 2 years ofdirectly related work experience. Data Architect, III: Requires a bachelor's (orequivalency) + 6 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 4 years ofdirectly related work experience. Data Architect, IV: Requires a bachelor's (orequivalency) + 8 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 6 years ofdirectly related work experience. Demonstrated expertise in navigating ambiguity by translatinghigh-level clinical, operational and strategic inquiries fromstakeholders into robust, well-structured data assets that movework forward. Proficiency with SQL and at least one modern datatransformation framework or ETL/ELT toolset. A proven track record of data stewardship, including theconsistent application of naming standards, business definitions,dependency tracking, and lineage as part of the coredeliverable. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively within thecontext of a large, highly complex academic medical center. Capability to thrive in settings that require a balance ofsustained, iterative client partnership and the agility to respondquickly to emerging issues. Preferences Hands-on experience with healthcare data sources andEpic-derived data models like Clarity and Caboodle, as well asclaims and registry data. Familiarity with clinical and operational workflows and anunderstanding of how EHR configuration decisions impact downstreamdata capture and availability. Proven ability to partner directly with clinical analysts andfrontline leadership to refine ambiguous questions into actionable,stable data structures. Experience collaborating with enterprise data warehouse teamsto leverage existing institutional assets and orchestrate thetransition of mature work into standardized productionenvironments. Advanced knowledge of dimensional modeling, slowly-changingdimensions, and design patterns that support both standardizedreporting and exploratory analytical use. Working knowledge of data privacy and protection obligationswithin a health system context, including HIPAA compliance and thedata processes associated with IRB protocols and PHI. A demonstrated preference for building reusable, domain-focuseddata assets that are designed to evolve rather than creatingcustom, one-off datasets for individual requests.
