Lab Engineer - Robotics & Automation

Position Overview

We are seeking a hands-on Lab Engineer to support robotics system verification, validation, and prototype testing. This role will be responsible for maintaining test environments, troubleshooting electro-mechanical systems, operating specialized motion capture equipment, performing robot repairs, and supporting the infrastructure required for hardware testing.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot test environments, fixtures, PLC/I/O control systems, and laboratory equipment to ensure high test uptime.
• Perform hardware rework, component testing, prototype fabrication, and robot repairs.
• Diagnose equipment issues and perform root-cause troubleshooting of electro-mechanical systems.
• Set up, calibrate, operate, and troubleshoot optical motion capture systems, such as OptiTrack and Vicon.
• Configure motion capture systems, including rigid body and skeleton setups, and support post-processing activities.
• Integrate third-party instrumentation such as force plates and gantry controls into test and tracking environments.
• Manage laboratory equipment, tools, supplies, materials, and workstation systems.
• Follow required laboratory safety procedures, including lockout/tagout and equipment interlock protocols.
• Read and interpret CAD drawings, electrical schematics, equipment specifications, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Develop and maintain technical documentation, including test reports, work instructions, troubleshooting procedures, and lessons learned.
• Collaborate with engineering and technical teams to identify requirements and develop effective laboratory tools and processes.

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in a technical laboratory, robotics, electro-mechanical, automation, or similar environment.
• 5+ years of experience troubleshooting, diagnosing, operating, and maintaining electro-mechanical systems, PLC/I/O control systems, or laboratory equipment.
• 3+ years of hands-on experience with hardware rework, equipment repair, prototype fabrication, component testing, and laboratory safety procedures.
• Strong ability to troubleshoot hardware and identify root causes of equipment and system issues.
• Ability to interpret electrical schematics, CAD drawings, technical specifications, and SOPs.
• Strong technical documentation and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Hands-on experience with OptiTrack, Vicon, or similar optical motion capture systems.
• Experience with rigid body/skeleton configuration and motion capture data post-processing.
• Knowledge of Python and/or C++ for data streaming, automation, or laboratory scripting.
• Experience integrating force plates, gantry controls, and other third-party instrumentation.
• Experience working in robotics, prototype development, system verification, or hardware validation environments.
• Strong cross-functional collaboration and problem-solving skills.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a resourceful, hands-on Lab Engineer, Robotics Engineer, or Electro-Mechanical Technician with experience supporting robotics test labs and prototype environments. The candidate should be comfortable troubleshooting physical hardware, operating complex test equipment, supporting system validation, and maintaining safe and reliable laboratory operations.
