Diagnostic Laboratory Phlebotomist On any given day, the 200+ Diagnostic Laboratory Services team members collect blood specimens to support patient care for 1500 to 2000 ambulatory patients, and 500 to 600 inpatients. 90% of the time, the Ambulatory Lab Visit is completed in less than 20 minutes from check‑in to band aid on the arm, and 90% of the time, inpatient AM lab collections are completed by 8 AM. The team works to keep our patients and staff safe; provide an outstanding patient experience; treat patients and each other with respect and kindness; and strive to provide patient care in a professional and courteous manner. The ideal candidate is a skilled and reliable phlebotomist who performs venipuncture, arterial draws, and blood culture collections with accuracy and confidence. The candidate follows all policies and safety protocols, ensures proper patient identification, and maintains specimen integrity at all times. They work efficiently with minimal supervision, support team members, assist in training new staff, and are committed to continuous learning and maintaining a safe environment for patients and coworkers. The typical work schedule is Monday‑Friday, 8 am‑4:30 pm, no weekends or holidays; subject to change. Initial or remedial training will be completed at the Medical Center for one month. Responsibilities Demonstrates competency via direct observation and assessment for the following phlebotomy procedures: Venipuncture Arterial Puncture – Inpatient Blood Culture Collection for Bottles or Isolator Tubes Isolation Room Procedures Age Specific Skills Completes assignment without undue reliance on others. Achieves productivity standard of the section. Assists with problem solving. Attends continuing educational programs. Assists with the training of new hires and students. Adherence to Policies, Procedures, and Protocols Performs all phlebotomy procedures in accordance with the section's procedure manual. Accurately identifies patient and collects the correct specimens. Maintains specimen integrity by collecting and transporting specimens in a timely manner. Completes records (electronic and paper) and files as appropriate. Assists co‑workers as required. Compliance with Safety Policies Assists in ensuring a safe environment for patients, co‑workers, and visitors. Utilizes all equipment and supplies in a manner that ensures safety to patients, co‑workers and self. Wears protective attire and personal protective equipment in accordance with regulatory, institutional, and divisional requirements. Participates in all required safety training. Education Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent Work Experience Required: Five years Phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory or blood center, including one year of project coordination, lead or supervisory experience. Licenses and Certifications Required: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Upon Hire Required: CPT – Phlebotomy Technician Certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Registry (BOR) or American Certification Agency (ACA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
