Licensed Optician

EyeSmile Dentistry & Optometry of Belmont is seeking an experienced, Massachusetts Licensed Optician to join our growing optometry practice. We are looking for a confident, motivated professional who combines exceptional optical knowledge with outstanding patient service, strong sales skills, and the ability to take ownership of the day-to-day operations of our optical department. The ideal candidate enjoys building relationships with patients, has an eye for frame styling and lens technology, and understands how to create an exceptional optical experience from the doctor's recommendation through final eyewear delivery. Key Responsibilities Patient Care & Optical Sales Work directly with our optometrists to ensure a smooth handoff from the exam room to optical. Review doctor-recommended eyewear and treatment options with patients and reinforce the doctor's recommendations. Provide personalized frame styling based on prescription, lifestyle, facial features, comfort, and patient preferences. Educate patients on lens materials, designs, coatings, progressive lenses, computer/occupational lenses, sunglasses, and other premium lens options. Accurately take all necessary optical measurements. Adjust, repair, troubleshoot, dispense, and verify eyewear. Create a welcoming, consultative experience that helps patients feel confident in their eyewear decisions. Present second-pair, prescription sunglass, and specialty eyewear options when appropriate. Clearly explain vision insurance benefits, patient responsibility, pricing, and available options. Optical Department Management Take ownership of the organization, presentation, and daily operation of the optical department. Maintain attractive and well-merchandised frame boards. Monitor frame inventory and identify opportunities to improve the product mix. Meet with frame representatives and assist with frame purchasing and inventory decisions. Receive and verify optical lab orders for accuracy and quality. Track outstanding orders and proactively address lab delays, remakes, warranty issues, and patient concerns. Maintain accurate optical inventory and ensure appropriate documentation of orders, sales, and returns. Review lab invoices and orders for accuracy, including applicable second-pair discounts and credits. Help monitor optical performance, including capture rate, sales, second-pair opportunities, and other key department metrics. Identify opportunities to improve optical workflow, patient experience, and department performance. Contact Lens & Clinical Support Conduct contact lens insertion and removal training for new wearers. Assist with ordering, receiving, and maintaining contact lens trials and inventory. Support the doctors and clinical team with patient flow and clinical duties when needed. Reinforce patient education and follow-up instructions provided by the doctor. Work collaboratively with the entire EyeSmile team to provide a seamless experience from check-in through exam, optical, and checkout. Team & Practice Support Maintain accurate and timely documentation of optical orders and patient interactions. Assist with phones, scheduling, insurance questions, payments, and front-office responsibilities when additional coverage is needed. Communicate effectively with doctors, clinical staff, front desk, laboratories, vendors, and patients. Help maintain a professional, organized, patient-centered environment. Participate in team meetings, training, and initiatives designed to improve the patient experience and practice performance. Qualifications Current Massachusetts Optician License required. Previous optical experience required; experienced opticians strongly preferred. Strong knowledge of frame fitting, optical measurements, lens materials, lens designs, progressive lenses, coatings, and troubleshooting. Experience with optical sales and patient education. Strong understanding of vision insurance benefits and optical billing. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Confident, polished, professional, and comfortable making recommendations. Highly organized with strong attention to detail and follow-through. Comfortable taking ownership of an optical department and being accountable for results. Ability to work collaboratively in a busy, team-oriented healthcare environment. Strong commitment to providing an exceptional patient experience.
