Corrections EMS Clinician

Minimum Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalency and a minimum of two (2) years' clinical experience in a pre-hospital, hospital, clinic, healthcare, or correctional facility setting.
• Current and valid PA EMT, Advanced EMT, or Paramedic certification required at the time of application.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Must have current CPR/BLS certification prior to appointment. Act 33/34 clearances are required prior to appointment.

It is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status, and drug/medical examinations as required for the position. The pre-employment drug screen must be completed within 48 hours of the acceptance of the conditional offer of employment.

Position Summary:


Under the indirect supervision of the Director of Nursing, the Corrections EMS Clinician is responsible for assessing individuals entering the jail and identifying needs for medical treatment prior to acceptance into the facility. Once accepted, they continue to monitor medical needs during the intake process and respond to any medical emergencies in the intake areas. The Corrections EMS Clinician collaborates with all other medical staff (RN, LPNs, and Medical Providers) and corrections staff working in intake.

Overview:


Duties:

• Assesses new detainees entering the jail to determine medical acceptance based on established assessment screening and physical presentation into the facility.
• Identifies medical risk factors that require closer monitoring during the intake process.
• Establishes positive, trusting rapport with client base while asserting ethical boundaries.
• Observes, reports, and objectively documents complaints or changes in the patient's condition.
• Assists in lifting/transferring non-ambulatory patients into and out of beds, chairs, lifts, and wheelchairs.
• Measures, reports, and records weights, vital signs, and other diagnostic assessments.
• Verifies medications and medical information.
• Prepares and maintains examination and treatment areas.
• Responds to facility emergencies in accordance with both PA certification and ACJ scope of practice.
• Performs assessments/ screenings on newly incarcerated individuals and provides various treatments when needed in accordance with both PA certification and ACJ scope of practice.
• Maintains medical records and performs administrative tasks (i.e. answering phones, typing reports, escorting visitors etc.)
• Obtains specimens as directed within ACJ scope of practice.
• Utilizes appropriate safety techniques and standard precautions in the medical care of patients and adheres to infection control procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

• PA Scope of Practice for current certification level.
• Medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern correctional care.
• Policies and procedures regarding infection control.
• General medical terminology.

Skill in:

• Microsoft Office products, including Excel.

Ability to:

• Effectively manage patient care and prioritize needs.
• Demonstrate strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Accomplish work independently.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, outside agencies, the public, and incarcerated individuals, etc.

• Learn county computer systems and databases.
• Maintain client confidentiality in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
• Maintain professionalism and treat patients with dignity and respect.

Residency: Not required to live in Allegheny County
