Job Summary

The Patient Care Technician (PCT Tech) plays a critical role in supporting Augusta Health's mission and advancing departmental goals through measurable performance indicators and service excellence. This position contributes to a collaborative, patient-centered environment and helps drive outcomes aligned with organizational priorities.

The Patient Care Technician in the Observation Unit is responsible for providing care to patients requiring short-term monitoring, diagnostic testing, or therapeutic interventions who do not meet criteria for inpatient admission. Under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse, this role performs various duties assisting unit staff nurses to ensure efficient unit operations and safe patient care following established procedures. These tasks may include clerical support and direct patient care. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her assigned unit or within his/her department.

This is an ADN Scholars Program position.

Essential Job Duties

Teamwork:

• Participation in patient care delivery activities.
• Behaves in a manner that fosters trust and respect to all team members.
• Ensures rooms and carts are restocked.
• Readily accepts daily assignments.
• Promotes harmonious relationships and positive attitudes among the health care team as noted by positive comments and lack of complaints from coworkers.

Implementation:

• Demonstrates ability to be attentive to individual patients while multi-tasking.
• Demonstrates knowledge of equipment used and troubleshooting.
• Communicates to charge nurse and assigned RN any patient identified needs, change in condition or concerns.
• Documents clear accurate picture of events and care.
• Keeps hazardous blood and body fluids and non-hazardous spills cleaned up.
• Observed to call patient by proper name.
• Maintains patient privacy when working with the patient as observed by closing the door curtain when providing care, reinforcing patient instructions as indicated.
• Contributes to efficiency of unit by escorting patients' family to correct area.

Evaluation:

• Continually notes changes in patient and provides appropriate care as instructed and communicates changes to RN.
• Provides appropriate patient teaching and follow-up information.
• Maintains competency in patient age groups.
• Professional behavior is maintained in difficult situations.
• Minimizes waste of supplies in an effort to reduce cost.

Personal Growth:

• Completes yearly education requirements and competencies for the unit.
• Assumes responsibility for own personal education and developmental needs.
• Identifies personal learning needs and initiates methods to meet the needs through formal or informal education.
• Self-directed in seeking out learning opportunities to improve knowledge and skills. Displays positive and congenial attitude
• Participates with interdisciplinary team members and other units to meet the needs of the patient.
• Minimizes absences and other disruptions to staff schedule.
• Attends staff meetings at least 50%.
• Attends in-services as required or requested by the unit leader.
• No complaints from co-workers, physicians, patients, family.

Personal Safety:

• Consistently uses Personal Protective Equipment including eye protection per policy.
• Demonstrates knowledge of proper body mechanics.
• Utilizes Safe Patient Handling devices correctly to minimize risk of injury.
• Disposes of sharps appropriately.
• Utilizes safety devices/shields as appropriate.

Patient Safety:

• Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure the safety of special population of patients.
• Maintains the patient environment in a clean, safe, orderly and functional manner according to safety and infection control standards.
• Abides by policies/procedures for Isolation.
• Consistently follows CDC guidelines for hand hygiene.
• Knowledgeable role in patient safety plan.
• Demonstrates knowledge of patient two unique identifiers.
