JOB SUMMARY

The Housing Advocate Supervisor provides leadership, guidance, and daily support to front-line Housing Advocate staff who serve individuals and families seeking shelter at The Road Home. This role helps ensure that all guests experience a safe, welcoming, and trauma-informed environment while receiving high-quality shelter services. Working as part of a cohesive supervisory team, the Housing Advocate Supervisor contributes to a strong, coordinated shelter response by modeling compassionate engagement, supporting problem-solving during challenging situations, and fostering a culture of respect and professionalism. The ideal candidate is motivated, compassionate, open to learning, and committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of people experiencing homelessness.

1. Provide direct supervision, guidance, coaching, and support to 24/7 front-line staff. 

1. Work collaboratively with other shelter supervisors to ensure all guests receive trauma-informed, person-centered services. 

1. Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for guests and staff; identify facility or staffing needs and communicate them to the Director. 

1. Identify and share relevant community resources that may support guests in meeting their basic needs and housing goals. 

1. Serve as an integral member of The Road Home’s leadership team by providing feedback on staff performance, guest concerns, and opportunities to strengthen shelter services. 

1. Support Housing Advocate staff in navigating challenging guest interactions, problem-solving barriers, and advocating for individuals experiencing homelessness. 

1. Ensure completion and accuracy of all safety-related reporting, including incident reports and other critical documentation. 

1. Collaborate closely with other shelter supervisors and the Director to ensure clear communication about guest needs across agency departments and with community partners. 

1. Facilitate daily shift-change meetings and ensure consistent communication among staff across shifts. 

1. Attend weekly supervisory meetings and participate in additional meetings as required. 

1. Manage weekly staff schedules, ensuring adequate coverage in compliance with shelter licensing requirements; provide coverage when minimum staffing is not met. 

1. Review and approve staff timesheets and complete required administrative paperwork and departmental reports in a timely and accurate manner. 

1. Attend mandatory agency trainings, including Trauma-Informed Care, Housing Focused, De-escalation, Suicide Prevention, CPR, and more.  

1. Participate in emergency drills and environmental safety activities, as required. 

1. Follow all agency protocols for security, safety, and sanitation to maintain a clean and secure environment for guests and staff. 

1. Maintain regular and reliable attendance as an essential function of this position.

Supervisor Duties and Responsibilities

1. Model trauma-informed leadership in all interactions with staff and guests. 

1. Provide clear, constructive feedback to staff regularly, fostering growth and accountability. 

1. Hire, train, mentor, and support team members through hands-on guidance and resource sharing.  

1. Delegate tasks effectively while ensuring equitable distribution of workload. 

1. Resolve conflicts promptly and professionally, using de-escalation techniques and leading difficult conversations with kindness and directness.  

1. Uphold agency policies consistently and lead by example. 

1. Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with employees to exchange feedback, actively listen, and address professional development needs. 

1. Develop and implement performance improvement plans and other corrective actions when needed, with measurable goals, equipping staff with the tools and guidance to achieve success. 

1. Collaborate cross-departmentally to align team goals with organizational mission. 

1. Monitor and ensure completion of all mandatory training, while maintaining accurate participation records. 

1. Track and report on team performance metrics (attendance, outcomes, etc.), as needed. 

1. Perform employee evaluations as scheduled, offering actionable feedback and tailored support. 

2. Advocate for staff needs while balancing operational priorities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

• Experience working with diverse and/or vulnerable populations is preferred.  
• High School Diploma or GED is preferred.  
• At least one year of direct supervisory or leadership experience is preferred. 
• Experience in shelter services, crisis response, social services, customer service, or other fast-paced, people-centered environments is preferred.  

SKILLS AND EXPECTATIONS ​​

1. Ability to lead meetings, facilitate group discussions, and communicate information clearly across multiple shifts. 

1. Experience collaborating with external partners and internal departments to support coordinated service delivery. 

1. Strong documentation and reporting skills, with the ability to communicate clearly, professionally, and objectively in written form. 

1. Experience coordinating staff schedules, monitoring shift coverage, and responding to staffing needs in real time. 

1. Ability to support diverse front-line staff in a fast-paced environment.  

1. Ability to remain calm, grounded, and supportive during crises or high-stress situations, using trauma-informed practices.  

1. Ability to de-escalate challenging situations with professional and compassionate engagement.  

1. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks and respond quickly to operational needs. 

1. Ability to maintain healthy professional boundaries and uphold confidentiality. 

1. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse populations. 

1. Provide thoughtful and attentive customer service by communicating clearly and handling difficult situations with professionalism, patience, and empathy. 

1. Use basic computer programs (email, spreadsheets, and more) and have basic computer skills. 

1. Ability to accept supervision, direction, and feedback with openness. 

1. Communicate clearly and effectively with clients, coworkers, and supervisors using verbal and written communication. 

*Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening.  

• Ability to lift and move heavy items up to 50 pounds, including guest belongings. 

• Ability to sit, stand, and move for at least an hour at a time or more.  

• Ability to bend, squat, kneel, twist, push, and pull to perform job functions. 

• Ability to use stairs or steps. 

• Wear OSHA-required protective gear for safety.
