Structural Engineering Practice Discipline Leader

The Structural Engineering Practice Discipline Leader (SEPDL) is responsible for overseeing the Firm’s structural engineering core team members and resource pool. The SEPDL will be responsible for staffing resources for all sector projects. The SEPDL will provide personnel management including staff recruitment, development, training, and leadership for areas of responsibility. The SEPDL will be accountable for modeling our client’s core values and advancing design excellence within the office and across the Firm.

Typical Duties

• Oversee and manage the functions and duties of the technical discipline at all staff levels. Lead the discipline relative to all production and technically related matters.
• Oversee and manage the discipline's staffing assignments with sector project workload in collaboration with other practice discipline leaders, the sector operations leaders and the sector discipline leaders.
• Remain current with the latest technological, life safety and code developments and reflect these advancements in the training and development of staff.
• Maintain and advance the Firm’s structural standards, practices and documentation procedures. Recommend workflow improvements and provide training to update staff.
• Ensure staff familiarity and use of our client’s design process, including practice technology standards, to meet quality standards.
• Monitor the process and quality of departmental shop drawings, addendums and bulletins.
• Seal discipline documents requiring permit and regulatory agency approvals for projects under responsible control.
• Manage the registration coverage for structural engineering practice in all active states of practice.
• Manage recruiting, interviewing, hiring and termination activities for the firmwide structural core team and resource pool in accordance with the sector and corporate budget parameters. Develop and maintain the highest level of qualified professional staff available for the discipline.
• Develop and conduct education, training and development programs for the discipline, within the establish our client’s budget. Ascertain needs for training and educate staff through in-house seminars, discipline meetings and mentoring.
• Motivate and mentor staff to provide the highest quality architecture and engineering within a team concept, interfacing with all disciplines and conforming to establish our client’s Firm policies and procedures.
• Evaluate performance and conduct annual feedback reviews for the discipline staff.
• Participate in the year-end salary, bonus and promotion program for compliance with establish our client’ goals, performance expectations and promotion criteria for the discipline, with input from operations leaders, business leaders and principals.
• Serve as a project structural engineer, or in other team position, to meet chargeability targets.
• Represent the Company in the professional community as requested or required.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the operations practice leader.

Skill, Knowledge, Education and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in engineering, with specialty in structural engineering.
• Professional licensure as a structural engineer.
• LEED accredited preferred.
• Minimum 15 years' professional experience.
• Extensive knowledge of all aspects of professional services from marketing through project close-out, including design and technical expertise.
• A comprehensive understanding of the coordination aspects and related requirements of all design disciplines.
• Ability to motivate others and develop teamwork; excellent writing and speaking skills and strong organizational skills.
• Ability to work well with others under deadline situations.
• Very detail-oriented, self-motivated, enthusiastic and flexible.
• Working knowledge of computer software and BIM programs a plus.
• Possess strong business acumen.
• A senior level position, highly visible to clients and employees that requires maturity, assertiveness, integrity and the ability to lead, influence and persuade.
• Ability to interact well in various business and social settings with all types of people in a mature and professional manner.
• Capable of performing all duties of a project structural engineer.
• Computer literate.

Physical Requirements

• Capable of traveling to and from project sites for attending client, project and construction meetings.
• Ability to access existing and new project sites for observation, investigation and evaluation purposes.
• Ability to use equipment for communication and documentation purposes.
• Visual acuity to perform responsibilities.
