Staff Nurse
The UI Stead Family Department of Pediatrics division of Hematology/Oncology is seeking to hire a Staff Nurse. This position assesses bleeding disorder patients' nursing care needs, evaluates effectiveness of care provided, and integrates nursing theory and research into clinical practice. Collaborate with members of the clinical team in order to maintain patient care standards. Must have RN licensure.
This is an outpatient position that works with hemophilia team [Nurses, physicians, mid-level providers, social work and specialty pharmacy.
Position Responsibilities:
- Provide nursing care for approximately 700 patients of the IHTC; provide continuity of care throughout their life span.
- Plan, organize, implement, and evaluate job duties needed to be done daily
- Provide a specialized level of clinical service for care coordination to patients with congenital and acquired bleeding disorders, infectious diseases and clotting disorders.
- Manage and support telephone triage for the IHTC.
- Follow treatment protocol and established therapeutic guidelines.
- Perform venipuncture for labs and/or infusion of treatment products.
- Conduct risk assessments for IHTC patients with the help of physicians and clinical coordinators for Hepatitis and HIV. Order and interpret ID labs per IHTC infection disease protocol. Counsel patients and families on symptoms, transmission, and resources. Make recommendations for follow-up.
- Assist with discharge planning of IHTC bleeding disorder patients who are in-patient.
- Participate in outpatient clinics for comprehensive annual evaluation of patients with congenital bleeding disorders, infectious diseases, and thrombophilia.
- Coordinate patient care for clinic, in-patient and out-patient surgeries, and general care including communication with involved disciplines, obtaining medical history of patients, pre-scheduling testing, ordering labs per protocol, follow-up with patients and care providers, coordinating continuing appointments, consultation, and instruction to patients.
- Update and provide treatment care plans with-in scope of practice under supervision of physicians.
- Assess lab results, symptoms, and history of patients suspected of a bleeding disorder and complete follow-up care coordination.
- Review insurance and initiate prior authorizations for medications and services as needed.
- Help with planning and execution for Annual Hemophilia Treatment Center Amish Outreach Clinic with Social Work through Continuity of Care.
- Attend hemophilia national and regional meetings (NBDFF, HTRS, ISTH, BDH, or Great Plains Regional Meetings, etc.) to enhance knowledge and understanding about bleeding disorder.
- Attend national hemophilia training program for new hemophilia nurses (i.e. Partners Program) as appropriate or needed.
- Prepare for, attend, and provided nursing care to children attending Hemophilia Camp.
- Attend Bleeding Disorders of the Heartland events including an overnight annual meeting, and overnight family education meeting.
Collaborate/Communicate with Health Care Team
- Collaborate with nursing staff and other health care professionals in the development and review of standards of care and protocols for persons with bleeding disorders to assure safe and effective delivery of care. Monitor practices to ensure they comply with these standards and practices.
- Communicate effectively with team members including but not limited to patients, caregivers, internal and external physicians and dentists, referral sources, schools, internal or external physical therapists, social work, internal and external pharmacists and pharmacy techs, insurance companies, and external nursing agencies.
- Collaborate with national hemophilia organizations (i.e. NBDF, HFA, NACCHO, YETI, NHF Nurses Working Group (NWG), Great Plains Region, and more).
- Participate in the local and national bleeding disorder communities.
- Perform public relations role for the UI Health Care IHTC including attending events outside of normal work schedule.
- Collaborate with the UI Health Care hemophilia specialty pharmacy team, and pharmacy storeroom manager, to arrange factor treatment for surgery, inpatient and outpatient infusion, and home going supply. In addition to our IHTC pharmacists provide monthly review of patients ordering factor from our pharmacy as required by CMS guidelines.
- Collaborate and participate in patient care programs in both Pediatric and Adult Hematology inpatient units, collaborating with nurse management teams to provide education to staff, students and residents on bleeding disorders, identification, treatment and management of bleeding episodes and special nursing care of these patients.
Provide Education
- Provide advanced health education related to bleeding and clotting disorders to health professional students/residents/fellows/staff nurses.
- Serve as a clinical expert in bleeding and clotting disorders and provide disease specific education for patients and families.
- Communicate detailed, complex medical/dental information to health care providers and a variety of other audiences in the local community.
- Collaborate with patients of bleeding disorders to consent for studies if needed, obtain necessary data for grant proposals and progress reports including organizing and summarizing statistics if needed.
- Implement, manage and evaluate instructional programs and educational modules to establish competency for healthcare providers, patients, and families.
- Present at regional and national conferences and provide education, literature and consultations to personnel, public and professional organizations/agencies in general and in direct associate with patients of hemophilia, bleeding disorders and infectious disease, regarding these disorders/diseases, treatment administration and additional services provided by the IHTC.
- Mentor health care students and create educational experiences for them in the IHTC and at the Hemophilia summer camp.
Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Staff and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession Education
- Apply evidence-based research and guidelines to develop and implement new policies and procedures to improve patient care in collaboration with other IHTC team members.
- Follow national recommendations to improve care and collaborate with IHTC team to evaluate our practices. Follow/apply policies/documentation requirements.
- Monitor lab results for pediatric patients with clotting disorders for medication management per established guidelines; communicates with physician for recommendations and then to patient/family, pharmacy, lab, and other healthcare providers.
- Assist with utilization of factor products, direction, and compliance of the clinical services to our IHTC patients who receive their treatment product from the UI Health Care Hemophilia Home Care Program in accordance with the policies and procedures of the UI Health Care, state professional standards, and all Health Care regulating entity requirements. This includes new referrals/intake and coordination of care.
- Recommend, order, and administer factor replacement appropriate treatment products within established therapeutic protocols and guidelines from the patient's Hemophilia Treatment or Procedure Plan or Anticoagulation Plan.
- Assure safe delivery of care for those with bleeding disorders in clinic and in-patient. Ensure that protocols and policies are followed for patients with bleeding disorders.

Education Requirement:
- Registered Nurse with a current, valid Iowa RN license or eligible to become licensed in the state of Iowa.
- May be required to be licensed in surrounding states where UI Health Care HTC patients reside.
Experience Requirements:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the Internet.
Desired Experience but not required:
- Minimum of 1 year of nursing experience.
