Position Summary The Intermittent Float Nurse is an integral part of the Heritage College nursing team, ensuring the integrity and quality of clinical care and research at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. This role provides flexible nursing support across multiple settings, including the Clinical and Translational Research Unit (CTRU) and Community Health Programs (CHP). When assigned to the CTRU, the Float Nurse independently performs medical tasks or assists with procedures in the clinical setting, working with diverse populations and a range of conditions, including those involving investigational products or procedures. When assigned to CHP, the Float Nurse provides nursing support for clinics serving uninsured and underinsured individuals across a 12+ county region through the Heritage Community Clinic and fleet of mobile health units. A strong understanding of medical procedures (e.g., IV insertion, venipuncture, medication administration and accountability, ECG, etc.), patient education, and excellent bedside manner is essential. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, Institutional Review Board (IRB) approvals, and institutional policies and procedures. Adaptability, ability to work well with patients and the public, and a strong, team-oriented approach are essential for success in this role.

Position Responsibilities: The Float Nurse will perform a variety of duties and activities within the CTRU and Heritage College, including but not limited to:
  • Collect and process samples (e.g., venipuncture, fingersticks, urine, fecal), assist with medical procedures (e.g., biopsies, insulin clamping, drug infusions), and perform medical tests (e.g., vital signs, imaging studies, electrocardiograms).
  • Administer drugs (e.g., IV, injection, oral), distribute investigational drugs or interventions, and provide patient teaching regarding administration or procedures as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with protocols and program guidelines through accurate documentation and reporting.
  • Document medical history and data accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR) and maintain responsibility for proper documentation.
  • Obtain authorization for release of medical information and coordinate follow-up care to ensure continuity with personal care providers.
  • Provide education and medical information for disease management, support clinical skills labs and workshops, and assist with clinical competency assessments.
  • Participate in Business Continuity Planning activities for the CTRU and attend regular research team, organization, or CTRU meetings to discuss ongoing and upcoming activities.
  • Complete required training and maintain proficiency with relevant technologies and procedures.
  • Travel to promote Heritage College activities, study needs, or community initiatives.
  • Provide training or presentations to university, community, or other groups (e.g. medical students, graduate students, etc.)
  • Perform other duties as assigned
The Float Nurse will perform a variety of duties and activities within Community Health Programs and Heritage College, including but not limited to:
  • Provide nursing support for clinics serving uninsured and underinsured individuals in a 12+ county region through the Heritage Community Clinic and fleet of mobile health units.
  • Provide direct patient care and various screenings (e.g., health, vision, hearing).
  • Document patient encounters accurately and in a timely manner in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Ensure compliance with program guidelines through accurate recordkeeping and reporting.
  • Educate patients on topics ranging from immunizations to chronic disease management.
Position Profile


Provides patient care services in a clinical setting serving students, staff, faculty, clinical trial subjects, and/or patients. Performs patient assessments and makes nursing diagnosis. Performs procedures including, but not limited to, emergency care and first aid, injections, dressings, and specimen collection, as required. Provides patient education and responds to patient inquiries. Documents and charts patient vitals, concerns, treatment provided, etc.

Level Summary


Provides professional expertise to the University community. Serves as a resource and guide to others in the department and/or university. Completes operational tasks essential for the daily functioning of the University. Additionally, contributes to larger projects or initiatives that align with department or University goals, often collaborating across teams.

May assist in mentoring or training new employees.

Fiscal Responsibilities


No budgetary responsibility. May be responsible for validating transactions.

Physical Requirements


The position requires prolonged standing, frequent bending, stooping, and travel. Candidates must possess strong communication, auditory, and visual skills, with keen attention to detail and the ability to write legibly. Physical requirements include the ability to lift, push, or pull between 20 and 50 pounds. The role may involve exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and infectious diseases.

Minimum Qualifications


Requires a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (B.S.N.) and 3-5 years of related professional experience, or equivalent education and experience. License or license eligible as a Registered Nurse (R.N.) in the state of Ohio required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid driver's license
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification and willingness to obtain AHA BLS Healthcare Provider Instructor certification
  • Nursing competencies within the scope of practice, including performing vital signs, administering medications (IV, injections, oral, etc.), and assisting with medical procedures (e.g., biopsies, surgeries)
  • At least one year of clinical research experience preferred
  • Knowledge of clinical trials and GCP (Good Clinical Practice) concepts preferred
  • Ability to pass an FBI/BCI enhanced background check in accordance with the organization's standards.

Pay Rate


The approved hiring range for this position is $32.65 to $40.67 per hour Offers outside of this range require additional approvals. The final offer will be commensurate with the candidate's education and experience in relation to the minimum qualifications for the position.

Work Schedule


This is an as-needed position to cover intermittent needs. Standard office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; however, candidates must be willing to work evenings and/or weekends as coverage needs arise. This position is shared between two departments, the Clinical and Translational Research Unit and Community Health Programs within Heritage College, and coverage may vary depending on departmental needs. Given the intermittent nature of the role, there are expectations regarding communication, including regularly checking email, as coverage opportunities and requests will be communicated via email.
