Position Summary The Intermittent Float Nurse is an integral part of the Heritage College nursing team, ensuring the integrity and quality of clinical care and research at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. This role provides flexible nursing support across multiple settings, including the Clinical and Translational Research Unit (CTRU) and Community Health Programs (CHP). When assigned to the CTRU, the Float Nurse independently performs medical tasks or assists with procedures in the clinical setting, working with diverse populations and a range of conditions, including those involving investigational products or procedures. When assigned to CHP, the Float Nurse provides nursing support for clinics serving uninsured and underinsured individuals across a 12+ county region through the Heritage Community Clinic and fleet of mobile health units. A strong understanding of medical procedures (e.g., IV insertion, venipuncture, medication administration and accountability, ECG, etc.), patient education, and excellent bedside manner is essential. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, Institutional Review Board (IRB) approvals, and institutional policies and procedures. Adaptability, ability to work well with patients and the public, and a strong, team-oriented approach are essential for success in this role. Position Responsibilities: The Float Nurse will perform a variety of duties and activities within the CTRU and Heritage College, including but not limited to:
Provides patient care services in a clinical setting serving students, staff, faculty, clinical trial subjects, and/or patients. Performs patient assessments and makes nursing diagnosis. Performs procedures including, but not limited to, emergency care and first aid, injections, dressings, and specimen collection, as required. Provides patient education and responds to patient inquiries. Documents and charts patient vitals, concerns, treatment provided, etc. Level Summary
Provides professional expertise to the University community. Serves as a resource and guide to others in the department and/or university. Completes operational tasks essential for the daily functioning of the University. When assigned to CHP, the Float Nurse provides nursing support for clinics serving uninsured and underinsured individuals across a 12+ county region through the Heritage Community Clinic and fleet of mobile health units. A strong understanding of medical procedures (e.g., IV insertion, venipuncture, medication administration and accountability, ECG, etc.), patient education, and excellent bedside manner is essential. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, Institutional Review Board (IRB) approvals, and institutional policies and procedures. Position Responsibilities: The Float Nurse will perform a variety of duties and activities within the CTRU and Heritage College, including but not limited to:
- Collect and process samples (e.g., venipuncture, fingersticks, urine, fecal), assist with medical procedures (e.g., biopsies, insulin clamping, drug infusions), and perform medical tests (e.g., vital signs, imaging studies, electrocardiograms).
- Administer drugs (e.g., IV, injection, oral), distribute investigational drugs or interventions, and provide patient teaching regarding administration or procedures as needed.
- Ensure compliance with protocols and program guidelines through accurate documentation and reporting.
- Document medical history and data accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR) and maintain responsibility for proper documentation.
- Obtain authorization for release of medical information and coordinate follow-up care to ensure continuity with personal care providers.
- Provide education and medical information for disease management, support clinical skills labs and workshops, and assist with clinical competency assessments.
- Participate in Business Continuity Planning activities for the CTRU and attend regular research team, organization, or CTRU meetings to discuss ongoing and upcoming activities.
- Complete required training and maintain proficiency with relevant technologies and procedures.
- Travel to promote Heritage College activities, study needs, or community initiatives.
- Provide training or presentations to university, community, or other groups (e.g. medical students, graduate students, etc.)
- Perform other duties as assigned

- Nursing competencies within the scope of practice, including performing vital signs, administering medications (IV, injections, oral, etc.), and assisting with medical procedures (e.g., biopsies, surgeries)
- At least one year of clinical research experience preferred
- Knowledge of clinical trials and GCP (Good Clinical Practice) concepts preferred
- Ability to pass an FBI/BCI enhanced background check in accordance with the organization's standards.
