Sisseton sits in the far northeast corner of South Dakota on the Lake Traverse Reservation, home of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate. It is glacial lakes country: Big Stone Lake and Lake Traverse are on the doorstep, Sica Hollow and Roy Lake state parks are close by, and the fishing and hunting are excellent. Watertown is about an hour away, FargoMoorhead under two hours, and the Minnesota line is ten minutes east. The cost of living is far below what you would pay in a metro practice.

Hector International Airport (FAR), Fargo ND about 1 hour 45 minutes from the facility. Watertown Regional Airport (ATY) is about an hour away, and Sioux Falls Regional (FSD) about 2.5 hours.

Woodrow Wilson Keeble Memorial Health Care Center is a modern Indian Health Service outpatient health center, built in 2007, serving about 7,000 tribal members. Optometry works alongside dental, behavioral health, community health, pharmacy, lab, radiology and physical therapy under one roof, in a Patient Centered Medical Home model. 100 Lake Traverse Drive, Sisseton, SD 57262

Responsibilities include:

• Full-scope primary eye care for patients of all ages: examination, diagnosis, treatment plan, follow-up and consultation
• Routine, diagnostic, consultative and urgent optometric care, typically 1216 patients per day in 30-minute appointments
• Prescribe from the facility formulary and refer through Purchased & Referred Care when specialty care is needed
• Patient education on eye disease, diabetic eye health and prevention
• Document in the electronic health record and complete charts within 72 hours

Qualifications include:

• Doctor of Optometry from an ACOE-accredited program
• Active, unrestricted optometry license from any U.S. state, DC, Puerto Rico or a U.S. territory a South Dakota license is not required
• One-year residency, or at least one year of optometry practice within the last 24 months
• Electronic health record experience

Schedule: MondayFriday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. No nights, no weekends. Federal holidays off. Twelve-month contract, anticipated to start December 2026.
