Relief Orthopedic Surgery APP – Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Job location: Redwood City, CA. Position: Per Diem Orthopedic APP, primarily based at Redwood City with potential coverage of other locations. Focus on total joint, sports, and acute injury cases. Schedule Work 3-5 shifts per month, each shift lasting 8 hours. This schedule allows flexibility while maintaining a consistent workload. No nights or weekends required. Responsibilities Abide by all Joint Commission requirements, including sensitivity to cultural diversity, patient care, patient rights, ethical treatment, safety and security of physical environments, emergency management, teamwork, respect for others, participation in ongoing education and training, communication, adherence to safety and quality programs, sustaining compliance with National Patient Safety Goals, licensure and health screenings. Provide medical services within the PA’s competence, consistent with education, training and experience. Consult with a physician regarding any task, procedure, or diagnostic problem which exceeds the PA’s level of competence or refer such cases. Evaluate and treat patients with acute and chronic complaints and health maintenance concerns related to the specialty. Obtain complete histories and perform pertinent physical exams with assessment of normal and abnormal findings on new and return patients. Perform or request and evaluate diagnostic studies as indicated upon evaluation of the patient. Order or furnish medications under physician supervision, in accordance with the practice agreement, consistent with the PA’s educational preparation and training, and upon completion of a California Physician Assistant Board approved controlled substance course. Order and collect specimens for routine laboratory tests, screening procedures and therapeutic procedures, including blood and blood products. Order physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, radiology examinations and nursing services. Perform designated procedures after demonstrated competency, according to written standardized procedures where applicable. Obtain informed consent, as indicated. Initiate arrangements for hospital admissions and discharges and complete appropriate paperwork. Enroll patients in investigational studies approved by the Investigational Review Board, and order necessary tests and medications; obtain patient‑specific orders for off‑label use. Assist the supervising physician in the operating room, acting as first or second assistant under the supervision of an approved supervising physician; perform surgical procedures in the presence of the supervising physician. Recognize age‑specific needs of patients. Communicate and interact effectively with patients, families, staff, and community members from diverse backgrounds. Recognize situations requiring immediate physician attention and initiate life‑saving procedures when necessary. Coordinate inpatient and outpatient care and services as needed. Facilitate collaboration between providers and coordination of community resources. Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory and clinical policies and procedures. Participate in quality improvement initiatives. Provide and coordinate patient teaching and counseling. Education & Qualifications BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN NURSING FROM AN ACCREDITED UNIVERSITY. PAs hired prior to July 1, 2012 are not subject to this educational requirement; Graduate of a PA program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. Over 3 years of orthopedic experience preferred. Ability to work effectively as part of a team, take initiative, and be self‑led. Licenses & Certifications PA - Physician Assistant State Licensure BLS - Basic Life Support DEA - Drug Enforcement Administration Completion of a California Physician Assistant Board approved controlled substance course. Compensation Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $91.60 - $121.38 per hour. The salary of the finalist will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
