Job Summary (List Format) Optical Network Engineer, Corporate Communications Transmission Network (CCTN):
- Design, Engineer, and Maintain mission-critical optical communications networks (DWDM, fiber, microwave, DC power) supporting Con Edison and Orange & Rockland utility operations.
- Develop network architectures, engineering plans, scopes of work, bills of materials, technical specifications, and project schedules for telecommunications infrastructure projects.
- Design and implement optical transport networks for SCADA, EMS, OT systems, RTUs, voice, cybersecurity, and corporate data connectivity.
- Perform network engineering activities supporting communications between energy control centers, substations, generating stations, data centers, microwave sites, and corporate facilities.
- Commission, test, troubleshoot, and upgrade optical and telecommunications equipment (DWDM, MPLS, Ethernet, microwave, TDM, Fibre Channel).
- Utilize optical test equipment (OTDR, power meters, spectrum analyzers) for fiber characterization, circuit validation, and performance verification.
- Install, route, label, inspect, clean, and document fiber-optic cabling and jumper connections to ensure proper connectivity and network integrity.
- Maintain and update DWDM network designs , including wavelength plans, loss budgets, equipment configurations, capacity expansions, and modernization initiatives.
- Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot DWDM network elements and supporting systems (transponders, amplifiers, ROADMs, multiplexers, network management platforms).
- Support microwave radio network engineering , including path analysis, equipment deployment, integration, performance checks, and maintenance.
- Supervise and coordinate telecommunications vendors and contractors ; review installation quality and verify as-built documentation.
- Develop and maintain engineering standards, templates, configuration standards, and network documentation.
- Participate in emergency restoration efforts and support off-hour work as needed for network implementations, maintenance, and service restoration.
- Travel throughout service territories (NYC, Westchester, Hudson Valley, NJ, Orange & Rockland) to support engineering, implementation, testing, maintenance, and emergency response.
- Handle physical tasks such as transporting, loading, unloading, and moving telecommunications equipment, materials, and tools.
- Prepare clear and concise technical, engineering, and operational documentation.
- Collaborate effectively with engineers, project managers, vendors, contractors, and stakeholders.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging telecommunications technologies and best practices.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols , including wearing required PPE.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's, Associate's, or High School Diploma/GED with relevant years of IT/telecommunications experience.
- Strong knowledge of DWDM, SONET, TDM, Ethernet, MPLS, and optical transmission theory.
- Experience with optical equipment commissioning, network validation, and troubleshooting.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Valid driver's license and personal vehicle for travel.
Physical & Additional Requirements:
- Ability to lift/move up to 40 pounds and perform physical work in telecom environments.
- Available for off-hours, emergency work, and company emergency assignments.
