The successful candidate will be responsible for leading an interdisciplinary team of attorneys, case managers, outreach workers, and community partners, ensuring that every client receives high-quality, culturally responsive representation grounded in holistic and restorative justice practices. This role demands a strategic and hands-on leader who can set the vision for community holistic defense, develop and implement a strategic plan, and build and lead a high-performing team. Immediate priorities include establishing clear standards for the defense framework, the role of case managers and outreach workers, and in-person investigative work to ensure legal representation is responsive to the communities served. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of and commitment to holistic defense, a Juris Doctorate, and be licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois. They should have at least 10 years of experience as a criminal law practitioner, with a strong background in juvenile and/or adult courts, and a minimum of 6 years in management and leadership within a nonprofit criminal justice organization. Experience with restorative justice practices, including peace circles, and a proven track record in fundraising, grant writing, or donor relations are also essential. The role requires a leader who can speak credibly in policy conversations, is comfortable working with researchers and data systems, and has a strong supervisory and team-building track record. The candidate should be familiar with the Cook County court system and its stakeholders, and have experience in public speaking, media engagement, or policy advocacy.
