Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN General)

Administers nursing care within the scope of practice as set forth in nursing regulations under the direction of a registered nurse or licensed physician. Administers oxygen, applies sterile dressings, inserts catheters, reinserts gastrostomy tubes, suctions, irrigates wounds, gives enemas, and collects specimens. Performs dialysis treatments, operates hemodialysis equipment, and monitors patients during procedures. Assists with physical exams, treatments, and laboratory tests. Provides emergency assistance by administering first aid, performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, and restraining patients as necessary. Administers controlled and non-controlled medications via various routes and provides medication instructions to patients. Maintains medication accountability records, prepares and counts medication, and monitors medical supplies and equipment. Observes, documents, and reports patient conditions, including medication reactions and treatment responses. Prepares and maintains related reports and records, such as unusual incident reports and medication logs. Provides general nursing care and personal assistance to patients, including taking vital signs and assisting with daily living activities. Administers topical ointments and solutions as well as eye, ear, and nose drops. Repositions patients as needed, responds to patient alarms, and assists with medical appointments and recreational activities. Provides orientation and training to lower-level direct care staff. Attends and participates in various meetings as assigned. Orders medication and medical supplies, cleans nursing stations, and performs clerical tasks. Knowledge of skilled licensed practical nursing procedures, pharmacology, client/patient care, and first aid techniques is required. Skills in using medical equipment and operating a computer are necessary. Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate emergency action is essential. Must develop good rapport with patients and understand verbal instructions and manuals associated with practical nursing. Demonstrated dexterity to administer injections and perform medical treatments, as well as the strength to move and reposition patients.
