The School Nurse advances the health, wellness, and safety of students through health education, direct service to students, delivery of staff and student training, and system-wide collaboration. The School Nurse also ensures the delivery of appropriate health care services according to the student care plan and assists in the development and evaluation of IEP and 504 plans for students with health needs. WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in school health rooms, classrooms, offices, and other educational settings throughout the District, with regular travel between assigned school sites. The position requires frequent interaction with students, families, staff, healthcare providers, and community agencies and may include exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, and emergency situations. The work environment requires flexibility, independent decision-making, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while supporting student health and safety. IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR
Special Services Director/Building Principal TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary and work year are determined by the negotiated agreement and the needs of the District. Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be completed before employment commences. The successful candidate for this position must complete a fingerprinted background check with the Washington State Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Employment is contingent upon clearance of the background check. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION HEALTHCARE BENEFITS - Employees who meet the eligibility criteria outlined in Chapter 182-31 WAC have access to medical, dental, vision, supplemental life, and supplemental disability insurance through the School Employee Benefit Board (SEBB). RETIREMENT - All regular, non-substitute employees are enrolled in a state retirement plan through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS). SICK LEAVE - All regular, non-substitute employees receive 12 sick leave days (prorated based on FTE) and paid time off. Substitute employees receive sick leave per RCW 49.46.210. PAID TIME OFF - All regular, non-substitute employees receive paid time off, including annual and/or vacation leave. Paid time off varies by position and work year. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in school nursing
- Experience with IEP's and 504 plans.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
- Washington State Educational Staff Associates School Nurse Certificate.
- Current Washington State Registered Nurse License.
- Experience working with children and families in preventive nursing.
- Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance.
- Valid Washington State driver's license or evidence of mobility.
- Proof of Immunization (if born 1/1/57 or later).
- I-9 Employment Eligibility.
- Completion of all district-required trainings within thirty (30) calendar days from hire date.
- Knowledge of school nursing practices, student health needs, and applicable state and federal regulations.
- Knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and professional standards related to school health services, including FERPA, HIPAA, IDEA, Section 504, and Washington State school health requirements.
- Ability to assess student health concerns, develop appropriate care plans, and respond effectively to health-related situations.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to communicate in a positive, professional, and respectful manner with students, families, staff, and community partners.
- Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships and work effectively as a member of multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to support and consult with staff, families, and healthcare providers to promote student health, safety, and educational success.
- Ability to maintain accurate records, protect confidential information, and exercise sound professional judgment.
- Commitment to creating a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for all students and families.
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple responsibilities across multiple school sites.
- Coordinate and conduct school health services, including mandated screenings, immunization programs, and the provision of healthcare in multiple school settings.
- Assess student health needs, recommend appropriate action, and monitor communicable diseases and other illnesses.
- Identify and plan for the health needs of medically fragile students and those with chronic health concerns.
- Consult with students, parents, and staff regarding health needs and services, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers, students, and families to assess the needs of students with long-term illness or injury, including home visits when necessary.
- Participate in multi-disciplinary teams at the building level to advise on modifying educational programs to meet the health needs of individual students.
- Maintain standard health room procedures, including medication administration, first aid, illness procedures, BECCA compliance, and attendance management, in cooperation with Health Services Assistants, office staff, and the Principal.
- Maintain current and accurate cumulative health care records and oversee the accurate maintenance of student health and immunization records.
- Identify students in need of medical and dental care and facilitate referrals for services as needed.
- Act as a liaison between physicians, school personnel, parents, and students regarding health problems, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of a comprehensive school health program in collaboration with school administration and staff.
- Assist students, families, and the school community in achieving optimal levels of wellness through appropriately designed and delivered health education.
- Serve as a resource to staff, students, and parents concerning health issues, providing guidance and support.
- Maintain confidentiality within legal, regulatory, and ethical parameters of Health and Education, ensuring privacy and professionalism.
- Complete written reports as required by state or local agencies, adhering to reporting guidelines and standards.
- Consult and assist classroom staff with health curriculum, such as HIV/AIDS, BAT, and Family Life, providing expertise and guidance.
- Advise on exclusion and readmission of students in compliance with board policy and local health district regulations on infections and contagious diseases.
- Engage in continuing professional education through attending classes, conferences, and staying informed about current legislation pertaining to school nurses.
- Perform other related duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and dedication to the well-being of students.
