Position Title Seasonal Surgical Technologist Position Code SurgTechSeas-6102 Department Surgery Department Safety Sensitive Yes Reports to Surgery Department Director Exempt Status No Compensation Hourly rate: $45.00 ($43.00 for non‑certified), full‑time hours, and a monthly living expense stipend of $750–$1,500 (taxable). Requires a call commitment. Position Purpose All KHI employees are expected to perform their respective tasks and duties in such a way that supports KHI’s vision to be among the kindest, highest quality health systems in the country. Key Responsibilities Works under the direction of the physician, coordinator, and first assistant; prepares instrumentation and supplies for cases, retracts tissue, passes instrumentation to the surgical team, and monitors the sterile field to ensure sterile integrity. Demonstrates understanding of various procedures and refers to preference cards. Initiates case pull for upcoming day and identifies the structure and function of body parts, recognizing common disorders. Communicates effectively with team members and surgeons to prepare each case according to individual physician preference. Formulates and prepares instrumentation and equipment for the case. Provides care in accordance with AST Standards and KHI policies through clear communication and ethical actions. Acts as a patient advocate, maintains confidentiality, delivers care in a non‑judgmental, non‑discriminatory manner, and supports patients and families with effective communication. Practices positive team‑building activities and interactions, demonstrates initiative, and is productive and efficient in use of time. Identifies emergency situations and uses sound judgment to institute established procedures calmly and efficiently. Applies the principles of asepsis knowledgeably to provide optimum patient care. Inquires into new surgical procedures and subjects related to the operating room. Anticipates surgeon needs to expedite procedures, minimizing patient trauma. Differentiates sterilization methods for special equipment and instruments. Displays dexterity in use of surgical instruments and knowledge of step‑by‑step procedures. Understands the use of anesthetic agents to care for the patient intelligently. Recognizes common disorders of the body. Education The tech acquires and maintains current knowledge in surgical technology. Provides documentation for in‑service attendance required by the nursing division. Keeps abreast of unit happenings by attending staff meetings or initialing meeting minutes. Completes the annual mandatory hospital program update. Education & Certification Qualifications Graduate of a school of Surgical Technology or equivalent training. BLS through the American Heart Association. Certified Surgical Technologist. Preferences Not specified. Special Position Requirements – Exposure Categories Category I: Expected duties have routine potential for exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues; subject to burns and cuts. Work Requirements Demonstrates good oral and written communication skills. Able to lift 50–75 pounds, combined lift of 150 pounds. Able to care for patients with infectious diseases.
