About the San Francisco Bach Choir The mission of the San Francisco Bach Choir (SFBC) is to inspire, inform, engage, and foster connections among Bay Area singers and audiences through outstanding choral music, and to offer dedicated singers the opportunity to study and perform both Early Music and the diverse repertoire of great works from other eras and genres. Founded in 1936, it is one of the oldest continuously performing community choirs in the western United States. SFBC uses a historically informed approach, period instruments, and professional instrumentalists and soloists. Role: Choir Manager Reports To: President, Board of Directors Role Description The Choir Manager (CM) has overall responsibility for the operational management of the San Francisco Bach Choir (SFBC). The CM works with the Artistic Director to plan and execute the season, including concerts, community programs, and choir-building activities. The CM implements the internal/communications plans, and serves as the point of contact for singers and the public. The CM is responsible for the daily operations of the choir, including supervising volunteers and managing assigned administrative functions. The CM is also responsible for concert production and ticket sales activities. Job Duties and Responsibilities Operational Leadership: Partner with the Artistic Director to plan and execute logistics of the choir season, including concerts and community programs (contracts and details related to collaborating performers), singer recruitment strategies, and designated additional activities. Work in collaboration with the Artistic Director and Board of Directors to execute components of the strategic plan. Manage implementation of applicable strategic plan goals, track progress, and communicate issues, risks, and successes to the Board of Directors. Work closely with the Board of Directors, participate in select Board Committees and present regular reports at monthly Board meetings. Participate in annual budget development and management in partnership with the Board Treasurer. Direct and execute all operations with a strong sense of ownership. This includes supervising volunteers, managing the choir’s administrative infrastructure, and collaborating with the Artistic Director and Board of Directors in managing concert and event logistics, including venues, instrumentalists, vocal soloists, and event-day execution. Execute specified marketing/communications and fundraising activities, in collaboration with the Board development and marketing committee, the Artistic Director, and consultants. Draft, edit, and distribute the weekly newsletter to singers. Build relationships with singers and partner with the Artistic Director for choir recruiting, retention, and singer community‑building activities. Specific duties include, but are not limited to: Monitoring WhatsApp choir chat group. Availability for Tuesday rehearsal break for singer support. Monitoring singer support email inbox. Support data management. Manage vendor payments. Partner with and/or supervise volunteers and actively promote volunteerism within the organization. Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop and support audience relationships. Qualifications Demonstrates integrity, warmth, positive energy, strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, a strong work ethic, and a sense of humor. Able to develop strong relationships with SFBC board members, singers, staff, and the external community. Able to oversee/manage and prioritize significant operational detail; demonstrated project management skills. Able to generate new ideas, explore non‑traditional solutions, and problem‑solve creatively. Able to work in a highly collaborative environment. Knowledge of and appreciation for classical choral music. Experience implementing successful marketing activities, including social media. Excellent writing skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a broad range of people. Interest in nonprofit administration, including experience in budget management and reporting. Strong organizational skills and the ability to simplify and streamline operational processes. Excellent computer skills (Google Workspace). Able to ramp up on new systems quickly. Experience with CRM platforms preferred. Hours and Working Conditions 20 hours/week, exempt position. Work from home with some night and weekend hours for in‑person rehearsals, meetings, concerts, and events.
