Maine Public Employees Retirement System (MainePERS) seeks a Compliance Attorney to join our Legal department. This is an excellent opportunity for a professional who enjoys translating complex legal and regulatory requirements into practical business solutions.
As Compliance Attorney, you will play a key role in strengthening organizational governance, managing enterprise compliance efforts, and advising leadership on evolving legal and regulatory requirements. Working collaboratively across the organization, you'll help ensure MainePERS operates with accountability and stewardship while supporting our mission of delivering retirement security to MainePERS’ members. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule after demonstrating proficiency in the position.
As MainePERS' compliance subject matter expert, your responsibilities will include:
- Developing, implementing and managing the organization’s compliance program.
- Acting as a resource senior management and business units rely on for depth and breadth of expertise regarding compliance issues.
- Maintaining knowledge of applicable federal and state legal and regulatory requirements, Board policies, and standards of conduct.
- Staying apprised of new and proposed legal and regulatory requirements and providing updates to senior management as appropriate.
- Recommending, drafting, revising, and assisting with implementation of policies, practices, and processes to enhance compliance.
- Monitoring, measuring, and reporting on the organization’s adherence to applicable requirements.
- Working with business units on identifying and appropriately addressing compliance vulnerabilities and operational risks.
- Drafting and distributing compliance communications.
- Working with Human Resources to develop and provide compliance guidance to staff.
- Working with MainePERS staff as resource on risk management matters.
- Serving as coordinator knowledgeable in System policies, practices and procedures related to appeals.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor or equivalent degree from an accredited law school.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current membership in good standing with the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar and licensed to practice law in Maine, or the ability to become licensed within 6 months following hire.
- Three to five years’ experience in regulatory, tax or legal compliance
- Knowledge of laws and regulations applicable to public pension plans
The anticipated starting salary is typically near the minimum of the pay range. Initial placement within the range will be determined based on the successful candidate's relevant education, experience, skills, and other job-related qualifications.

- Health Insurance Premium Credit – Participation decreases employee-only premiums by 5%.

- Defined Benefit Pension Plan – MainePERS contributes 17.25% of pay to pension on behalf of the employee.
- Gym Membership Reimbursement – Employees may receive a wellness reimbursement of up to $300 per calendar year for individual physical fitness activities, gym membership, stress management programs, etc.
- Health and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts – Set aside money pre-tax to help pay for out-of-pocket health care expenses and/or daycare expenses.

- Parental leave - Paid parental leave for childbearing and adoption is available to an employee for up to 42 calendar days to support new parents in bonding and caring for a new child. Additionally, unpaid leave may also be available, under the Family and Medical Leave Act .
