Position Overview

The Anatomic Pathologist is responsible for delivering diagnostic pathology services by analyzing and interpreting surgical pathology, cytopathology, and autopsy samples. This role involves collaboration with clinicians, surgeons, and various healthcare professionals to enhance patient care, improve quality, and ensure efficient laboratory operations. Duties may also encompass participation in multidisciplinary meetings, educational activities, research, and administrative tasks based on the needs of the organization.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyze and interpret surgical pathology samples, providing precise and timely diagnostic reports.

• Assess cytology samples and offer diagnostic consultations as necessary.

• Conduct and interpret both gross and microscopic examinations of tissue samples.

• Employ ancillary testing methods, such as immunohistochemistry, molecular diagnostics, and special stains, to aid in diagnosis.

• Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals regarding pathology results and patient management strategies.

• Engage in multidisciplinary tumor boards, clinical discussions, and quality assurance initiatives.

• Ensure adherence to relevant regulatory, accreditation, and laboratory standards.

• Maintain thorough and accurate medical records and pathology documentation.

• Contribute to initiatives aimed at quality improvement and laboratory performance metrics.

• Participate in on-call duties and departmental responsibilities as assigned.

• Assist in the education and training of medical students, residents, fellows, laboratory personnel, and other healthcare staff, as applicable.

• Engage in scholarly, research, and academic pursuits relevant to the role.

Qualifications

Educational Background

• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited institution.

Training Requirements

• Completion of an accredited residency in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.

Certifications and Licensure

• Board certification or eligibility in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology from the American Board of Pathology.

• Eligibility for medical licensure in the relevant state.

• Ongoing maintenance of professional certifications and compliance with continuing medical education requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Thorough understanding of surgical pathology and diagnostic pathology principles.

• Expertise in histopathologic interpretation and report writing.

• Familiarity with laboratory quality assurance, safety protocols, and regulatory standards.

• Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.

• Capacity to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

• Dedication to patient safety, quality enhancement, and professional growth.

• Strong organizational and time management capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Fellowship training in a pathology subspecialty.

• Experience in an academic medical center, hospital, or large healthcare organization.

• Proven interest in research, education, or quality improvement projects.

• Experience in multidisciplinary clinical programs and tumor boards.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to perform extended periods of microscope work and computer-related tasks.

• Effective communication skills in person, over the phone, and through electronic means.

• Ability to fulfill institutional requirements for clinical practice and credentialing.

Reporting Structure

Reports to: Division Director, Department Chair, Medical Director, or another designated leader.

Work Environment

This role is conducted in a pathology laboratory, hospital, academic medical center, or healthcare facility. Compliance with laboratory safety standards and relevant regulatory requirements is essential.
