Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)

The Licensed Vocational Nurse in the Medical Surgical Unit is responsible for providing safe, high-quality care to general care patients as a team member under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The role demonstrates a commitment to patient and family engagement and effective communication. The Licensed Vocational Nurse practices in accordance with applicable state nursing practice regulations and policies. The nurse may administer intravenous medications upon successful completion of training and with delegation by a Registered Nurse. Responsibilities include documenting nursing care assessments, nursing interventions, and patient education for stable patients. The nurse alerts the supervising Registered Nurse to any observed changes in patient condition or unexpected assessment findings. Prior to providing care, the assigned patient plan of care and pertinent active orders must be reviewed. Assistance is provided to patients with activities of daily living and nutrition according to care goals. Focused nursing assessments, including vital signs and functional status, are performed and documented. Medications may be administered as prescribed, which includes oral, topical, and inhaled medications. The nurse applies dressings and assists with devices as indicated by assessment or as ordered by the interdisciplinary team. Important assessment findings and suggestions for enhancing patient care are reported to the interdisciplinary team and the supervising Registered Nurse. Compliance with policies related to safety, medication safety, and documentation is necessary. Participation in staff meetings and required learning activities is expected. Flexibility in scheduling requests is necessary, and time-off requests must be noted in advance. Perform other duties as required or assigned.
