Job Description
The Tooling Technician plans, coordinates, and directs all tool room functions to support continuous production in line with established quality and performance standards. This role ensures all molds and tooling remain in a ready-to-run condition through structured maintenance programs and effective management of tool room supplies. Job Description
The Tooling Technician plans, coordinates, and directs all tool room functions to support continuous production in line with established quality and performance standards. This role ensures all molds and tooling remain in a ready-to-run condition through structured maintenance programs and effective management of tool room supplies. The position focuses on mold repair, preventive maintenance, and accurate documentation to keep production equipment operating safely and efficiently.
Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, and direct daily tool room activities to support uninterrupted production.
- Maintain all tooling in a ready-to-run condition through scheduled and corrective maintenance programs.
- Complete all mold repairs within the plant's capabilities as requested by leadership.
- Troubleshoot and repair mold issues on production presses, responding to press calls in a timely manner.
- Disassemble and reassemble molds for repair, based on skill level and the complexity of the tooling.
- Perform grinding, polishing, and other bench work on tooling, including using a pencil grinder and opening vents as required.
- Operate shop equipment such as mills, lathes, and surface grinders to machine and repair tooling components.
- Read and interpret blueprints to diagnose issues and execute accurate tooling repairs and modifications.
- Perform preventive maintenance on all molds in a timely manner to minimize unplanned downtime.
- Create, enter, and complete work activities in the Work Order System, including INFOR documentation, to ensure accurate maintenance records.
- Maintain and update tool room supplies to support continuous maintenance and repair activities.
- Train on all shop and ancillary equipment, including mills, lathes, and surface grinders, to expand technical capability.
- Develop skills in bench work, including polishing and detailed finishing tasks, as part of ongoing training.
- Support a safe, organized, and efficient tool room environment aligned with manufacturing standards.
- Hands-on experience with mold repair and maintenance in a manufacturing or injection molding environment.
- Proficiency in tooling repairs, including disassembly, repair, and reassembly of molds.
- Ability to perform grinding of tooling and bench work, including polishing and using a pencil grinder for detailed work such as opening vents.
- Competence in machining operations using mills and lathes for tooling and die work.
- Experience with injection molds and tool and die practices.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints to guide repairs and modifications.
- Familiarity with CNC-related tooling or machining processes in a production environment.
- Competence in operating shop equipment and ancillary equipment, including mills, lathes, and surface grinders.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve mold issues on production presses (press calls).
- Capability to complete preventive maintenance tasks on molds according to established schedules and complexity levels.
- Ability to create, enter, and complete work activities in a computerized Work Order System, including INFOR documentation.
- Willingness to work 3rd shift and support overtime as needed.
- Enrollment in, or commitment to enroll in, a 4-year apprenticeship program (night school) focused on tooling, mold making, or a related trade.
- Willingness to train on all shop and ancillary equipment, including mills, lathes, and surface grinders.
- Willingness to develop bench work skills, including polishing and detailed finishing using a pencil grinder.
- Experience working in an automotive manufacturing environment.
- Experience working in an injection molding environment.
- Comfort working within a union environment and following established procedures and guidelines.
