Water Meter Technician

The City of Renton's Public Works Maintenance division is accepting applications for Water Meter Technicians Water Meter Technicians perform technical, physically labor-intensive, and operational tasks in support of the Public Works department. Tasks are often routine and recurring. Contribute to the City’s vision, mission, and goals in the performance of all job duties. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Input meter readings, meter conditions, special instructions, and no-read reasons into a hand-held porta processor. Read and record commercial and residential water meters to determine consumption. Install, retrofit, repair, test, and maintain water meters and Automated Meter Reading (AMR) equipment. Maintain the area around meters and assure meter boxes are clean of dirt, debris and water. Locate meters, find leaks, and trouble shoot meter problems; change out meter boxes to grade and meter setters, replace tail pieces, and turn valves on or off. Obtain closing reads and re-reads and relay information to office personnel for processing. Assure that water meters are operating properly; perform accuracy tests; remove, replace, test, or repair faulty meters as required; perform wire splices. Respond to customer questions and complaints. Shut off accounts for non-payment and turn accounts on after payment; set up new accounts and sequence numbers; post public hearing notices for the City Clerk's Office. Operate a hand-held porta processor, computer, utility locator, wrenches, shovel, shut-off devices and other tools and equipment required for the job. Operate computer and associated software; maintain assigned records, reports, logs, and files; create and maintain graphs, spreadsheets, and reports; reprogram meters; inspect data, verify accuracy, and input into computerized databases; update, modify, and correct data as needed. Provide information and communicate problems to other City departments and personnel (e.g., engineering and utility billing); explain activities, procedures, and data within scope of authority; provide information of a general or limited technical nature. Perform traffic control and flagging duties for co-workers, other City departments and contractors. Assist other crews as an unskilled helper. Perform light maintenance and cleaning of assigned vehicle(s); perform preventive maintenance on the Flex Net Tower Gateway Base station (TGB). Contribute to an environment of teamwork and respect. Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by recognizing the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals. Participate in and help provide cross-training in processes as directed by management to ensure a well-rounded team for coverage purposes. Perform other duties as assigned. May be assigned to support City priorities during emergencies. Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field. Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of this classification. Valid Washington State driver's license. Traffic flagging certification or the ability to obtain such certification within the first 6 months of employment. CPR certification within the first 6 months of employment. Competent Person Training within 1 year of employment Successful passing of a required background check and driving record check. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Drive to offsite locations to perform essential functions. Move throughout City facilities and buildings. Operate a computer and other office equipment. Communicate with City employees and residents. Lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds regularly and 100 pounds occasionally. Bending, stretching, and standing for extended periods. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and indoors in an office environment occasionally. Noise level out in the field is moderately loud. Noise level in the office is moderately quiet. Work evening and/or weekend hours as needed.
