\n\n Job Summary\n
\n \n \n\n The OB/GYN Laborist Role A is an in-house position which ensures that safe, high quality, evidence-based care is provided to obstetric patients and that hospital resources are managed in a clinically appropriate way. In sites where residents and/or medical students are present this may include resident supervision and education. The OB/GYN Laborist Role A is the primary, first line provider who is expected to be immediately available and present during the entirety of their shift.\n

\n ASSIGNMENT: 24 Hour In-House Call Coverage Program\n
\n LOCATION: High volume labor and delivery units (>3,000 deliveries per year)\n
\n Essential Functions\n
\n \n \n \n\n
- \n
- Prevention of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality by ensuring that all inpatient obstetric care meets and/or exceeds current standards of care. \n
- The prevention of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality should result from role A’s identification and remediation of any area of clinical concern via collaboration with the members of the obstetric care team which may include
\n a. Medical students
\n b. nursing staff
\n c. resident ob/gyn and/or family medicine physicians
\n d. maternal fetal medicine fellows
\n e. advanced practice providers including certified nurse midwives, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners
\n f. private and/or faculty attending ob/gyn and/or family medicine physicians \n - Through collaboration with the charge nurse, ensure that unit resources are managed in a clinically appropriate need-based way which may include
\n a. Prioritization of pending labor inductions
\n b. Prioritization of pending cesarean deliveries \n - Provide on-site, restricted obstetric care for patients who
\n a. have had no prenatal care
\n b. if applicable, have had prenatal care with the staff service
\n c. have had prenatal care with a provider who does not have privileges at the facility
\n d. have had prenatal care with a provider who is unable to be present because
\n i. the provider is taking call from home and there is emergent clinical situation which cannot safely wait for the provider to arrive
\n ii. the provider has a personal emergency
\n iii. the provider is managing another clinical emergency \n - Facilitation of transfers from outside hospitals which may include
\n a. Accepting of all medically appropriate transfers
\n b. Informing all relevant members of the obstetric/neonatal team of pending arrival of transfer
\n c. Management of transfer upon arrival \n - Lead scheduled Safety Huddles and post-event debriefing sessions \n
- Provide clinical assistance to other ob/gyn attendings, advanced practice providers, and if applicable, resident physicians which may include but is not limited to
\n a. Second opinions for fetal heart rate interpretations
\n b. Assistance in managing obstetric emergencies such as shoulder dystocia and postpartum hemorrhage
\n c. Surgical assistance with complicated or routine cesarean delivery and obstetrical laceration repair
\n d. Multifetal deliveries \n - In facilities which have resident physicians, supervise and support the resident physicians’ management of obstetrics patients which may include
\n a. Triage evaluation and management
\n b. Antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum management \n
