Police Sergeant

The Gila River Police Department is looking for a Police Sergeant to supervise the day-to-day activities of Police Officers and/or Detectives within an assigned district on an assigned shift or perform responsible staff functions at headquarters. The position requires managing schedules, approving leave requests and time sheets, maintaining statistical data in reference to crime rates, and participating in the more difficult police and investigative issues and instructing subordinates in the methods to be followed.

Salary: $41.75 - $58.20 Hourly

Location: 637 W. Gu U Ki Street, Sacaton, AZ

Required Knowledge, Skill and Ability:

Knowledge of principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation. Working knowledge of modern police practices, police and supervisory methods, techniques, and the rules and regulations of the Gila River Indian Community and Gila River Police Department. General social problems and cultural diversity of citizenry. Working knowledge of Criminal law with particular reference to the apprehension, arrest and custody of persons committing misdemeanors and felonies including rules of evidence pertaining to the search and seizure and the preservation evidence in traffic and criminal cases. Working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, Tribal laws and Community ordinances. Methods and techniques used in providing the full range of law enforcement, crime prevention services, and activities including investigation and identification. Modern methods and practices of leadership and supervision. HR policy and Department Standard Operating Procedures. Excellent written and communication skills.

Abilities to effectively use and qualify with law enforcement tools and weapons including firearms, batons, defensive tactics, and other safety equipment. Understand, interpret, apply, enforce, and make decisions in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local policies, laws, and regulations. Interpret and explain community policies and procedures. Think clearly and act quickly in a variety of situations. Judge situations/people accurately. Supervise a variety of criminal and special investigations. Analyze crime and service patterns and to develop effective, tactical responses. Control violent people, affect arrests and defend self. Administer first aid. Prepare clear and concise reports and routine correspondence. Work irregular and on-call hours including weekends, evenings, and holidays. Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties. Meet department's psychological and background requirements. Meet and maintain required peace officer employment standards. Undertake and satisfactorily complete required and assigned in-service training programs. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Plan assign, instruct, train, and supervise the work of subordinates, both uniformed and civilian. Maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community Officials and the general public. Perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a Drug-free workplace.

Required Education and Experience: Minimum of sixty 60 semester hours, from an accredited college or university and a minimum of five (5) years professional experience as a Police Officer; OR seven (7) years' experience as a Police Officer. Associate's degree preferred in Law Enforcement, Criminology, Criminal Justice, or any related field.

Additional Requirements: Clear Federal Regulated Adjudication 25 Code of Federal Regulation §§ 63, Executive Order (E.O) 12968, the Gun Control Act of 1968 (Pub. L. 90-618); the Crime Control Act of 1990 (Pub. L. 101-647), and the requirements of the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, as amended (Pub. L. 101-630) – Background clearance every five (5) years. Must qualify for U.S. BIA Special Law Enforcement Commission as a condition of employment. Must possess full-authority peace officer certification as defined in AZPOST Regulations R13-4-103.A & D.1 and BIA Law Enforcement Services Manual, Volume 1, Chapter 2, Section 4, Paragraph 5, as a condition of employment. Required to obtain a Tribal Operator's permit. Valid state driver's license with a current proof of driving record for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit. Proof of driving record must be submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission of the application. Required mandatory reporter pursuant to Title 7, Chapter 2 (7.205), B. Required to attend Title 7 Mandatory Reporting training on a yearly basis. Applicants cannot have discipline above a Written Record of Discussion or been the subject of a Performance Improvement Plan within the twelve (12) months preceding job announcement.
