Responsibilities The duties of a Consumer Safety Inspector are performed in a hazardous working environment. Responsibilities include sampling, quality control, sanitation in food manufacturing or production environments; collecting samples, performing field tests and examinations; developing written reports; communicating findings; maintaining effective personal contacts. Incumbents also perform standard and recurrent duties independently, recommend refusal of exports, provide temporary coverage at locations outside the official duty station, and perform tasks in accordance with the Federal Meat, Poultry and Egg Products Inspection Acts, SSOP and HACCP principles, basic mathematics and statistical concepts. Qualifications Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education. Specialized experience is experience that provided knowledge of the properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities or other products for human consumption. Examples include work as consumer safety inspector, inspection aide, food inspector, public health inspector, quality inspection specialist, or similar roles with responsibility for sampling, quality control and sanitation. GS‑05: at least 52 weeks of qualifying experience with knowledge of regulated food commodities and substances. GS‑07: at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑05 and independent routine assignments. GS‑08: at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑07, including work with Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts, SSOP, HACCP, basic mathematics and statistics. GS‑09: at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑08, with more independent duties such as recommending refusal of exports. Physical Requirements This position requires a pre‑employment physical. Applicants must be physically and medically able to efficiently perform essential job functions, stand, walk on uneven floors and catwalks, climb stairs and ladders, lift, carry, push and pull up to 30 pounds (occasionally up to 50 pounds), have manual dexterity of upper body, good vision (20/40 in at least one eye), and ability to distinguish shades of color. Significant color blindness may be disqualifying. Hearing loss will be assessed on a case‑by‑case basis.
