within a supportive team environmentJob Duties:Supervise nursing staff assigned to shiftCounsel staffRecommend discipline as neededOversee and assist with admissions to and discharges from the facilityMake rounds of veteran/member areas to ensure proper level and quality of careFollow-up on all veteran/member issuesProvide direct care as requiredMay perform difficult nursing proceduresProvide support and consultation to the nursing staff on clinical issuesEnsure compliance with facility policies and procedures and State, Federal and VA regulationsOversee daily staff assignments to ensure that the facility is appropriately staffed to meet the Veteran/Member needs in the most efficient and effective mannerMay reassign staff or call in additional staff as necessary to maintain coverage through the shiftParticipate in the selection of nursing staffInterview and makes recommendation regarding hireOrient new staffAssist with the planning and delivery of in-service training for assigned shiftAssist in development of policies and proceduresAssist with quality assurance auditsReport to and take appropriate actions in emergency situationsContact the Director of Nursing Services and/or Administrator with significant issues (e.g., abuse, neglect, misappropriation of property or funds, fire or police involvement, elopements, etc.) in accordance with facility policies and regulationsAssist in conducting investigationsObtain, assign and maintain inventory of supplies, equipment and medications during the hours that the warehouse is closedServe on committeesAttend meetingsAssume staff assignments when necessaryKnowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs): Knowledge of:Principles, practices and techniques of professional licensed nursing care as applied to a skilled nursing environmentGerontological/Geriatric nursing theory and practicesResident condition and changing medical/physical/psychological care needsEffects of aging processCommunity and medical resources necessary to provide quality carePractices and procedures of team nursingPractices and procedures of developing treatment plans for resident/patient carePractices and procedures of pharmacology and medicinesFederal, State, VA, and agency laws, rules and regulations governing the practice of nursing within a skilled nursing facility, general professional nursing practices and the security and control of medical supplies and medications and dispensing thereofEffective supervisionBasic staff development principles necessary for training subordinate staffState Personnel System RulesSkill in:Professional nursing methods and techniquesObserving and assessing behavior and progress of patientsProblem-solvingApplying and interpreting state and agency laws and regulations governing geriatric nursing practicesDeveloping and carrying out patient care plans within a team nursing conceptVerbal and written communicationSupervision and leadershipThe ability to:Abid by nursing regulationsListen, observe, assess and respond to medical emergenciesEvaluate, analyze, make independent decisions and follow up regarding client health problemsRespond to medical issues/inquiries in a professional mannerWork with professional and non-professional staff to ensure health and safety of residentsEstablish and maintain effective work relationshipsLearn, implement, and monitor Arizona Management System (AMS) methodsSelective Preference(s):Long-term care experienceSupervisory/Management experiencePre-Employment Requirements:Current or temporary license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of ArizonaCurrent Negative TB skin test (Mantoux skin test) within the last twelve months or a written statement from a physician, physician's assistant or a registered nurse practitioner indicating freedom from Tuberculosis, if in the past has had a positive skin test or TuberculosisMust be able to obtain and retain a fingerprint clearance card issued
