EVS Supervisor (evening, night shifts)

Job Summary The incumbent, under the general direction of the EVS Manager, will direct, administer and coordinate the daily operations to provide a clean, safe and aesthetically pleasing environment for patients, visitors and staff. Scope Provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees. Functions as an advisor to unit and administration. Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives. Under general direction, responsible for the supervision and coordination of custodial operations. Provides direction to employees according to established policies and management guidance. Monitors compliance, operational performance and participates in long‑range planning. Responsibilities Oversees planning, organization and supervision of custodial services staff and operations; develops and maintains schedule within budgetary guidelines. Conducts audits of custodial operations to improve service levels. Trains employees and coordinates staff development opportunities; ensures environmental health and safety training in radiation, biohazard and chemical use. Enforces safety procedures, safeguards hazardous materials and ensures adherence to custodial and biohazardous material policies and procedures. Monitors regulatory policies, standards and requirements for healthcare facilities (e.g., infection control). Monitors supply and equipment inventory. Screens applications, interviews candidates and makes selection decisions or recommends individuals for hire. Conducts competency and performance evaluations, including communication with subordinates. Works closely with managers and HR to manage employee issues; conducts counseling and disciplinary sessions with staff. Determines discipline for subordinates with authority to apply and/or recommends same to management. Participates in developing and monitoring operational and budget processes; maintains scheduling within prescribed budgetary guidelines. Previous experience in a leadership or supervising position within a hospitality department. Solid knowledge of health care custodial cleaning standards. Skill to establish and maintain work standards adhering to health and safety requirements. Demonstrated skill to coach and instruct staff. Knowledge of relevant regulatory and industry codes, policies, standards and requirements. Skill to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing; articulate complex ideas to a diverse staff population; effectively interact with different personalities including ill people. Preferred Qualifications Supervisory experience in a healthcare facility with working knowledge of human resources management practices and policies. Understanding of hospital and clinical cleaning requirements per Nursing unit. Ability to set priorities and manage conflicting demands. Ability to work effectively under pressure meeting established goals and objectives. Intermediate computer application skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to deliver staff training and develop staff competencies. Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain a friendly, welcoming environment; demonstrate an interested, understanding, compassionate and caring manner; maintain a courteous and calm demeanor; use a proactive approach in negotiating with and persuading others to take required action. Ability to maintain composure, efficiency and a positive, customer service-oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, under tight deadlines and when interacting with challenging customers who may be ill, angry or emotionally distressed. Problem solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem, identify resources available to help solve the problem, create and implement viable solutions and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties. Decision making skills to independently recognize delegated authority to take action and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached. Ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained, and a professional, respectful clinic environment exists at all times. Skill to develop and implement many internal supporting programs. Skill to collect, compile, compute and analyze statistical data. Skill to delegate authority. Knowledge and understanding of staffing schedules to cover a seven‑day work period. Knowledge and operation of Environmental Services trade skill equipment. Knowledge of floor surfaces and professional upkeep. Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and usage requirements. Knowledge of solid waste management. Knowledge of hospital bed making techniques. Knowledge of floor finishing and hospital cleaning procedures. Knowledge of recycling program and pest management. Knowledge of clerical, storekeeping and supervisory roles/functions. Knowledge of local, state and federal ordinances/regulations. Knowledge of personnel services and classification procedures, also adequate staffing. Knowledge of Workers’ Compensation program and State Code Title 22 on hazardous waste.
