District 1 Bridge Inspection Supervisor

Job Responsibilities Supervises staff to prepare performance planning and evaluation documents and related personnel paperwork. Coaches, counsels, and trains employees. Establishes and monitors work progress. Implements management policies and initiatives and promotes teamwork within the organization. Performs periodic inspection and evaluation of bridge substructure and superstructure elements, including timber rot, concrete spalls and cracks, section loss due to rust, scour, settlement, and collision damage. Conducts visual and tactile inspections of bridge decks, superstructure, substructure, roadway approaches, and guardrails in accordance with the Bridge Inspector's Reference Manual (BIRM), the AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation (MBE), and the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS). Supervises and manages District Bridge Inspection personnel and program, performs QC/QA on inspections, and prepares inspection reports, structure inventory and appraisal sheets. Determines preliminary structural condition and safe load limit during field inspections until a comprehensive analysis can be performed. Reviews bridge inspection reports to ensure accuracy and timeliness within departmental and federal bridge program guidelines. Coordinates with Bridge Management Office, District Bridge Engineering staff, and contractors on matters related to bridge maintenance, inspection, and load posting. Enters daily work reports and bridge deficiencies in Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS) and Enterprise Asset Management System (EAMS). Instructs bridge inspectors on the proper use of inspection tools and equipment, and daily safety practices such as flagging operations and wearing safety equipment. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations throughout the district and state, including operating inclement weather equipment and performing special inspections after an event. May work extended hours or shift operations and performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum and Additional Requirements A high school diploma and seven (7) years of bridge inspection related work experience in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards; or an approved acceptable equivalence. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. The physical demands for the essential functions involve frequent bending, kneeling, stooping and lifting up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May require occasional exposure to noise. May require working outside of normal work schedules and weekends.
