Medical Office Receptionist

We are seeking a reliable, professional Medical Receptionist to join our primary care practice. This role serves as the first point of contact for patients and plays a key part in delivering an organized, efficient, and welcoming office experience. The ideal candidate has experience with Athenahealth (Athena) and a working knowledge of medical billing, insurance verification, and patient scheduling.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Greet and check in/check out patients in a courteous and timely manner
  • Schedule, confirm, and manage patient appointments using Athenahealth
  • Verify patient insurance eligibility and benefits prior to appointments
  • Collect copays, balances, and process payments accurately
  • Maintain and update patient records in the electronic health record (EHR) system
  • Answer and route incoming phone calls; respond to patient inquiries
  • Assist with insurance authorizations and referrals as needed
  • Review daily schedules for accuracy and resolve discrepancies
  • Support billing processes by ensuring accurate patient and insurance information
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and HIPAA-compliant front office environment

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; medical office certification preferred
  • Prior experience in a medical office, preferably primary care
  • Experience with Athenahealth (Athena) strongly preferred
  • Basic knowledge of medical billing, coding, and insurance processes
  • Familiarity with verifying insurance eligibility and handling prior authorizations
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency with computers, scheduling systems, and office software

Preferred Skills:

  • Understanding of CPT/ICD-10 codes (basic level)
  • Experience with patient collections and payment posting
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus

Work Environment:

  • Fast-paced primary care office setting
  • Requires sitting, standing, and frequent interaction with patients and staff
