Job Summary:


The School System Fleet Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for performing maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on school buses and other district vehicles to ensure they are in safe, working condition. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring the safety and reliability of transportation services for students and staff.

Key Responsibilities:

• Vehicle Maintenance & Repair : Perform routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on school buses and other district vehicles, including brake systems, electrical systems, and air conditioning units.
• Diagnostics: Use diagnostic tools and software to identify vehicle issues and implement solutions.
• Safety Inspections: Conduct regular safety inspections to ensure all vehicles meet state and federal safety standards.
• Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair work performed, including parts used and time spent on each task.
• Emergency Repairs: Respond to emergency vehicle breakdowns to provide on-site repairs or arrange for towing.
• Parts Inventory: Assist in inventory of parts and supplies, ensuring the shop is stocked with necessary items.
• Collaboration: Work closely with the Shop Foreman and Transportation Director to schedule and prioritize work to minimize disruption to transportation services.

Required Qualifications:

• Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience as a mechanic, preferably with school buses or large commercial vehicles.
• Knowledge: General knowledge of engines, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and preventive maintenance practices.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, equipment, and repair manuals.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with Fleet Management Software: Familiarity with digital maintenance tracking systems.

Physical Requirements:

• Lifting: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and occasionally lift heavier items up to 110 pounds with assistance.
• Mobility: Capable of standing, bending, stooping, and working in various positions for extended periods.
• Manual Dexterity: Proficient in using hand tools and power tools.
• Visual Acuity: Able to read and interpret repair manuals, diagnostic tools, and computer screens.
• Hearing: Adequate hearing to detect warning signals and alarms in a noisy environment.
• Work Environment: The job requires working in a bus shop environment, which may involve exposure to fumes, loud noises, and varying temperatures.
