Applied Design Program Manager

Job Description The Randall Museum's Applied Design Program Manager is a City of San Francisco Recreation and Park Department position responsible for administering the museum’s carpentry shop, Technology Fabrication Lab, and Ceramics studio, supporting new exhibit construction, maintenance, program planning, instructor management, equipment maintenance, and safety. Responsibilities Plan and manage quarterly classes and workshops. Coach instructors on syllabi, classroom management, and efficient material usage. Support all museum programs as appropriate. Build and maintain permanent and temporary exhibits, including planning, preparation, and installation of new museum exhibits. Oversee operations of woodshop, ceramics studio and FabLab, including organization, ordering, equipment maintenance, safety, and communication with Museum Director. Manage annual budget for the Applied Technology Program, contracts with city vendors, coordinate with maintenance staff, bid and contract outside contractors for shop or exhibit improvements. Supervise Randall Museum Friends part‑time instructors and Recreation and Parks part‑time staff; set standards, goals, priorities; identify problems and make decisions; schedule and assign work to staff and volunteers; develop and teach training programs. Provide public programming for the studios; instruct adults and teens in applied technology programs; develop and conduct other applied arts programming for the general public, school field trips, and after‑school programs; represent the museum and present programs at outside department and community events. Maintain equipment and materials safety records; conduct safety training classes for all staff and participants. Maintain shop equipment and scientific tools & materials; learn to maintain unfamiliar equipment. Coordinate museum‑wide events; design, construct, and install bi‑annual museum exhibits; plan and prepare activities for family day events. Engage with the general public, outside organizations, and groups; provide information about the museum’s activities and collections; represent the museum at department events and media venues. Partner with government agencies, foundations, and individuals on applied arts programs. Contract and coordinate with youth work programs to train and employ youth, working with Recreation & Park Department and city Youth Works programs. Minimum Qualifications Completion of a four‑year college or university degree, preferably with major coursework in fine arts, industrial design, or related subjects. At least three years of responsible museum experience in the relevant field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted. Valid California Driver’s license. Desirable Qualifications Major coursework in science, engineering, industrial arts, electronics, industrial design, or related subject matter. Three years of experience in designing and implementing multi‑session classes in applied arts education or similar professional experience. Four years of supervisory experience with museum, education, or recreation staff. Demonstrated cultural competency and effective educational practice to connect with a wide range of learners. Excellent communication and collaboration skills. Experience in graphic design, technical drawing, or illustration. Experience working with young learners. Pay & Benefits Appointment Type: 3542 Curator II Applied Design Program Manager, Permanent Exempt (PEX) appointment. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.
