Summary The Painter serves under the supervision of the Maintenance and Repair Supervisor. The function of this unit is the complete painting maintenance of all buildings, including fixtures, furniture, equipment, etc., and new construction as required. Responsibilities Duties include but are not limited to: Coating work accomplished by any of the accepted methods of the trade, including such special finishing techniques as marbling and graining. Determines the methods, techniques, devices, and materials that are best suited to the finish required. Prepares surfaces by methods such as smoothing with pumice and rotten stone, filling, shaping, and leveling with metal and synthetic resins, and mixing and applying pre-coating agents. Prepares materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending, and mixing in various additives. Cuts, fits, and installs window and door glass using glazing clips and putty. Taping and finishing of sheet rock. Estimating materials, submitting requests for purchase, assembling of materials and tools, ladders, scaffolds, etc. Responsible for inventory, researching parts and material, pricing items in stock. Responsible daily for the cleanliness of the work area and the job site. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The Painter prepares and coats surface from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms where the surface is to be coated, which may be in cramped and hard to reach places. This requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The painter frequently lifts, carries, and sets up material and equipment that weighs up to ten pounds. He is also required to do a considerable amount of moving furniture, such as desks, filing cabinets, and other materials and equipment that weigh forty pounds or more. Work is done inside or outside. Dirt, spray, and fumes are usually present. Occasionally the painter may be required to wear protective equipment and clothing that are heavy and uncomfortable. Incumbent is also exposed to irritation of eyes, skin, and respiratory tract that may result from painting, spraying, chipping off paint and plaster, and harmful fumes from chemicals and paints. The Painter is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. He may occasionally be exposed to the possibility of broken bones, cuts, and scrapes.
