Senior Originator (Utility Markets)

Position Summary Responsible for generating profitable wholesale electric sales, renewable energy sales, and emission credit sales. Identifies customer needs and develops structured electric service agreements. Evaluates industry trends, company data, and market dynamics to identify prospective mid‑market and longer‑term power origination opportunities. Builds positive long‑term relationships with key counterparties and presents power purchase/supply proposals to customers and senior management. Essential Responsibilities Generate profitable wholesale electric sales, renewables, and emission credit sales. Identify customer needs and develop structured electric service agreement structures. Use industry experience to evaluate trends and market data for identifying prospective origination opportunities. Develop positive long‑term relationships with key counterparties. Prepare and present power purchase/supply proposals to customers. Deliver oral and written sales presentations to senior management and Xcel Energy leadership. Promote sales of power and renewables to other utilities, building and maintaining customer relationships. Leverage industry contacts to provide market intelligence. Collaborate with the trading desk to develop structured transactions desired by customers. Understand and utilize various pricing models and centralized market operations (e.g., Midwest ISO, Southwest Power Pool). Acquire firm and non‑firm transmission paths to support transactions. Assist wholesale account management in meeting resource adequacy requirements. Develop, gain approvals, and implement wholesale sales strategies for operating companies. Support Market Operations team in promoting company objectives in industry forums. Provide technical market support during negotiated long‑term purchased power agreements. Mentor other originators. Possibly provide testimony in regulatory proceedings. Minimum Requirements Master’s degree (preferably MBA) in engineering, business, economics, or related field; or eight to ten years of equivalent trading/marketing or technical sales experience. Minimum 5 years’ experience in the energy industry. At least 3 years’ experience in power marketing, trading, or origination. Preferred Qualifications Deep understanding of ISO/RTO market structures and rules, especially MISO, SPP, and SPP RTO Expansion. Ability to structure and execute transactions supporting utility system needs across time horizons. Established commercial relationships with counterparties holding generation and capacity resources in core Xcel regions. Strong understanding of regulated utility business models and regulatory obligations. Experience partnering with resource planning teams for long‑term portfolio and near‑term system strategies. Track record of working closely with operations and dispatch teams to support reliability and system constraints. Ability to balance commercial objectives with risk management and compliance requirements. Focus on customer and system value creation through market transactions supporting utility‑serving obligations. Compensation and Benefits Anticipated starting base pay: $167,000.00 to $236,600.00 per year.
