Child Nutrition Assistant

Under general supervision, responsible for assisting the manager in overseeing kitchen operations to ensure that students are served nutritious and attractive meals in a clean and caring atmosphere. Responsibilities include food preparation, cooking, serving, cleaning, temperature checks, cashiering, sanitation tasks, and record management. The role also requires dual employment as a school bus driver and compliance with National School Lunch Program (NSLP) regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare, cook, and serve meals according to standardized recipes and special diet instructions.
• Use batch cooking methods and maintain warming cabinets and serving lines.
• Ensure safe/nutritional practices, meet HACCP standards, and support health‑department requirements.
• Order, receive, store, and inventory food items; verify invoices and report shortages.
• Maintain cleanliness of storage areas, food preparation equipment, and dining room surfaces.
• Operate as cashier, collect payments, handle deposits, and maintain accurate financial records.
• Assist with free and reduced meal administration and screening.
• Take and record temperatures of food and holding equipment.
• Serve as Person in Charge (PIC) in the manager’s absence and respond to inspections.
• Assist with temporary service tasks such as prep for next‑day breakfast or lunch.

Minimum Training and Experience

High School Diploma or GED preferred with 1–2 years of experience in institutional food preparation or childcare. Equivalent combination of training and experience acceptable.

Qualifications

• Physical ability to operate commercial kitchen equipment, lift up to 50 lbs, and stand/have agility.
• Knowledge of food preparation, sanitation, TPHC, HACCP, and USDA meal patterns.
• Strong communication and customer service skills; ability to assist students, parents, and staff.
• Proficiency with a computerized time management system and basic computer use.
• Understanding of cash handling, deposit procedures, and record keeping.
• Ability to act independently, resolve problems, and maintain quality standards.

Additional Job Functions

May function as cook, cashier, server, or helper; answer questions about ingredients, allergies, and meal components. Perform other related work as required.
