About the Role:

We are seeking a licensed Professional Liability Risk Management Attorney to provide practical, preventive legal and risk-management guidance to mental health professionals across the United States.

This is a flexible remote contract opportunity that allows attorneys to use their legal knowledge outside of traditional litigation and claims defense. The role involves short telephone consultations with insured mental health professionals who have questions about legal, ethical, confidentiality, documentation, and risk-management issues arising in their everyday practice.

Both experienced professional liability attorneys and more junior attorneys are encouraged to apply. Attorneys with backgrounds in professional liability or risk management are preferred, but relevant experience in other practice areas may also be considered. The primary requirement is an active U.S. bar license and the ability to provide clear, practical legal guidance.

Key Responsibilities:

• Conduct telephone consultations with mental health professionals regarding legal, ethical, and risk-management questions.
• Provide practical guidance designed to help professionals appropriately address issues before they develop into claims.
• Respond to questions involving confidentiality, privacy, patient records, releases of information, and documentation.
• Advise on professional boundaries, dual relationships, termination of therapeutic relationships, and difficult or threatening clients.
• Provide guidance concerning suicide and self-harm risks and related professional responsibilities.
• Address questions involving minor consent, parental access, custody-related issues, and mandated reporting.
• Provide general risk-management guidance based on applicable legal and ethical requirements.
• Conduct consultations in focused 30-minute appointment blocks, with many calls lasting only a few minutes.
• Communicate clearly and efficiently by telephone while identifying the key legal and risk-management issues presented.
• Prepare a brief written summary following consultations to document the guidance provided.
• Maintain consistent availability during normal business hours based on individual scheduling preferences.
• Handle a substantial volume of consultations while maintaining professionalism, accuracy, and responsiveness.
• Work independently while following established consultation and risk-management protocols.

Required Qualifications:

• J.D. from an accredited law school.
• Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. state.
• Attorneys licensed in multiple states are welcome and may be able to provide guidance across a broader geographic area.
• Experience in professional liability, risk management, healthcare law, mental health law, insurance defense, or a related practice area preferred.
• Experience involving mental health professionals such as psychologists, clinical social workers, professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, or behavioral health providers is a plus.
• Junior attorneys with other relevant legal experience are encouraged to apply.
• Strong legal research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to quickly identify legal and ethical issues and provide practical, understandable guidance.
• Comfortable conducting consultations independently by telephone.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to prepare concise written summaries.
• Ability to maintain consistent availability and manage multiple consultations throughout the business day.
• Professional judgment, discretion, and commitment to client service.
