Duties Summary Social Workers and Human Services Professionals improve the quality of life of people by preventing problems, improving accessibility, accountability, and coordination of service delivery among professionals and agencies. They work in diverse settings, including hospitals, social service agencies, schools, correctional facilities, and programs for substance abuse, aging, and family violence. All professionals use similar concepts, principles, and techniques across programs. Position Levels Type A: Fully trained, experienced staff who independently handle a caseload of predominantly highly complex cases. Clients may exhibit extreme hostility or resistance and have multiple severe problems, requiring determination and negotiation of services. Type B: Fully trained and experienced staff who serve as program specialists under higher-level direction. Tasks include interpreting guidelines, drafting policies, developing training, and monitoring implementation. Type C: Fully trained staff who perform direct service work typical of a Level III professional and concurrently supervise a small group of less experienced professionals without significant program management duties. Program Areas for Current Vacancies Department of Human Services (DHS) Adult Protective & Community Services (APCS) - Assess requests for adult services; investigate abuse and neglect; arrange appropriate services to ensure safety; provide comprehensive services to severely or chronically ill and disabled adults as an alternative to institutional nursing homes. General Human Services (GHS) - Work in one of the following: 1) employment-related or first-to-work services, child‑care licensing, and economic assistance; 2) administrative planning and implementation of statewide social service programs; 3) medical assistance; 4) vocational rehabilitation services for eligible individuals who are blind, deaf‑blind, or visually impaired. Minimum Qualification Requirements Legal Authorization To Work – Citizens, nationals, permanent residents of the United States, or individuals eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment. Basic Education Social Worker: Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree in social work from an accredited program (Council on Social Work Education or comparable body). Human Services Professional: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year college or university, including a minimum of 12 semester credit hours in courses such as counseling, criminal justice, human services, psychology, social welfare, sociology, or other behavioral sciences. Specialized Experience – Progressively responsible professional experience must demonstrate the ability to perform duties of the position. Experience must be of comparable scope and level to four years of college curriculum. No experience requirement for Ph.D. in Social Work. Social Worker with Bachelor of Social Work: 2 years of specialized experience. Social Worker with Master of Social Work: 1 year of specialized experience. Human Services Professional: 2½ years of specialized experience. Substitutions are allowed as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements. Applicants who will graduate within three months and meet the Requirements upon graduation may be accepted for examination; a letter of enrollment and transcript of coursework completed must be submitted.
