Transportation Dispatcher

The dispatcher assists the Transportation Department in the area of dispatching transportation personnel to ensure safe, timely transportation of students to school and related school events. This person also assists in adjustments due to accidents, breakdowns, weather, school schedules or other problems that may arise as a result of providing transportation service.

Education and/or Experience:

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
• Must be 18 years of age
• Minimum of two years experience as a school bus driver in a public school district (preferred)
• Valid TX Driver License
• Able to obtain a CDL

Special knowledge and skills:

• Knowledge of The City of Dickinson, Dickinson ISD Schools, and district boundaries
• Ability to pass criminal history background check
• Possess a high level of computer competency, and the ability to learn computer programs
• Demonstrated excellent attendance record
• Possess a high level of skill in communication, both written and oral
• Possess strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with drivers, other office staff, administration, students, and parents
• Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies
• Bilingual preferred

Essential Functions:

• Assist in monitoring of transportation routes to improve safety and efficiency through a thorough knowledge of school district streets and geography.
• Works with parents, drivers, school administrators, and the general public in resolution of problem situations.
• Maintains communications with bus drivers via two way radios.
• Assigns bus drivers, assistants and substitutes to bus routes.
• Reads maps and route descriptions.
• Keeps daily routing and transportation documents up to date in a timely manner.
• Assists in routine office operations.
• Promotes safety practices for all transportation employees.
• Assists the Transportation Department in maintaining statistics, time studies and state reports as needed.
• Opens the transportation office during the school year.
• Alert the Transportation Director/Route Coordinator and other designated school administrators of possible weather conditions which may affect student transportation.
• Perform all other duties assigned by the Director of Transportation.

The physical demands of this position include the ability to sit for extended periods of time. This position requires some walking and standing as well as bending and reaching at, below, and above shoulder level. Repetitive use of fingers and hands to operate a keyboard and other office equipment is necessary, as is hearing and speaking ability sufficient to provide information via the telephone, two-way radio and personal contact. Specific vision abilities including close vision, depth perception and the ability to focus are required.
