Housekeeping Aid

Overview This position is located within the Environmental Management Services Division of a VA Medical Center. It is under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor or designee and Performs janitorial and custodial services at the VA Medical Center in Long Beach, CA. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement (07/23/2026). Experience: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality to perform the work. Evidence must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume. Applicants will be rated under the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Screen-out element: qualifications will be evaluated against the minimum acceptable requirement. Those meeting minimum requirements proceed; others are ineligible. Additional elements include dexterity and safety, ability to interpret instructions (not blueprint reading), use and maintenance of tools and equipment, and work practices. Experience may include paid and unpaid work, including volunteer service through programs like Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, or other organizations. Don’t forget to indicate duties and hours for volunteer experience. A full year of work is typically 35–40 hours per week; part-time experience is credited proportionally. Duties Execute a full range of housekeeping activities in patient and non-patient care areas. May be assigned to any tour and may work in various designated areas during any tour of duty. Typically work independently with general supervision or with a team; responsible for the full range of cleaning duties in an assigned area throughout the facility. Perform floor maintenance, wall washing, bed making, cleaning doors and doorframes, baseboards, corners and edges, and stairwells. Sweep, dust mop, damp or wet mop, scrub, strip, refinish, buff, vacuum, and extract carpet and runners; perform spot cleaning and high/low dusting. Periodically use pressure washers and heavy industrial powered and battery-operated equipment; adjust and maintain equipment and change attachments as needed. Empty trash and wastebaskets and replace liners; transport general refuse, regulated medical waste, and recyclables to central collection areas. Clean restrooms, bathrooms, and shower rooms; ensure cleaning, disinfection, and deodorizing of lavatories, showers, bathtubs, urinals, and toilets; clean mirrors, sinks, and water fountains; wash and polish fixtures. Perform other duties as assigned. Work Schedule Includes various days and hours and may include rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. Physical Requirements The position requires continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing on a daily basis. Occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. Requires considerable dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and concentration to detect dirt, dust, and debris. Working Conditions Work is normally indoors with adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Some work may be performed outdoors with exposure to heat, cold, and inclement weather. Personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required in some circumstances due to potential exposure to contagious diseases or blood and bodily fluids.
