School Athletic Director Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is the third-largest school district in the United States, serving over 330,000 students in more than 600 schools and employing nearly 36,000 people, most of them teachers. Responsibilities Administer the extracurricular athletic programs, including supervision of licensed and non‑licensed staff, maintenance of required files and records, response to information requests, implementation of board policies, assessment of department needs, evaluation of programs, development and update of handbooks, community communication, research on sports issues, development of grade check systems, eligibility management, schedule creation, transportation oversight, and safety plan development. Monitor and support academic performance of student‑athletes by overseeing individual study plans, providing academic support mechanisms such as study halls and advising, and ensuring post‑secondary guidance. Direct and coordinate fiscal operations: fiscal planning, budget support, contract recommendations, purchasing, ticket sales and fundraising, management of student activity funds, hiring and payment of coaching staff, and coordination of parent volunteer organizations. Create departmental schedules and announcements, manage officials, ticket takers, announcers, lifeguards, transportation, eligibility verification, visiting team logistics, emergency health care, practice scheduling, contract management, and coordination with CPS and Chicago Park Districts. Recruit, manage, and evaluate staff: screen and interview candidates, assign coaching duties, ensure certification compliance, develop coaching evaluation systems, provide professional development opportunities, monitor staff time, investigate complaints, and lead program development and implementation. Manage facilities: inspect buildings, grounds, and equipment, issue repair orders, maintain safety and hygiene standards, oversee pool upkeep, schedule irrigation, handle construction specifications, identify community resources, and procure external space. Supervise departmental activities: coordinate public events, manage student help, establish rules and regulations, oversee insurance coverage for athletes, complete incident reports, resolve conflicts, and organize recognitions and awards. Lead public relations: establish a positive image, develop feeder programs, organize annual recognition events, maintain contest records, ensure seasonal compliance, and oversee summer athletic programming. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; Master’s degree and/or general administrative endorsement preferred. NIAAA Certified Athletic Administrator. Minimum of five (5) years of experience in sports program administration and/or interscholastic sports; supervisory experience preferred. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with a variety of audiences. Ability to coordinate and manage all aspects of the athletic program, including financials. Ability to motivate student athletes and coaches. Ability to make rational decisions under stressful conditions. Proficiency using technology and applications, including Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and web content editing software. Other Requirements This role requires a non‑traditional schedule which includes evening and weekend hours based on the individual school’s needs. Hours may change seasonally. Conditions of Employment Establish and maintain Chicago residency within six months of hire and throughout employment. Be fully vaccinated or submit to weekly COVID‑19 testing within 30 days of hire.
