Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Surgical Intensive Care Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 2 years minimum experience required License: VA or Compact license required Certifications: ACLS, NIH required Must-Have: - Ability to interpret and manage dysrhythmias - Arterial line management experience - Blood product administration experience - Patient care for trauma and complex surgical patients Description: The Surgical Intensive Care Unit cares for a specialized population of patients. This includes trauma patients, cardiovascular surgery patients, neurosurgery patients, and other complicated surgical patients. Required skills involve the interpretation and management of dysrhythmias. Experience with arterial line management and blood product administration is necessary. Patients may present with a variety of diagnoses, such as acute ventilatory needs, severe sepsis, and multi-system organ failure. The unit staff manages both medical and surgical cases. Procedures may include chest tube insertions, central line placements, and continuous renal replacement therapy. Patient ratios will vary from 1:2 to 1:3 depending on skill level and acuity. Weekend shifts are required every other weekend. The unit promotes interdisciplinary support, including services such as respiratory therapy and pharmacy. This position encompasses a mix of diverse patient populations and requires strong clinical assessment skills.
